Accepting responsibility for Congress’ poor showing in Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, the president of the party’s state unit Raj Babbar on Wednesday offered to resign from his post.

Faced by increased criticism after the poll debacle, Babbar said:

I could not live up to the expectation. I was given responsibility but I could not fulfil it, I accept it... I take responsibility for party’s defeat and have offered to resign from my post.

The Congress leader was appointed as the party’s UP chief months before the election, in which Congress struck up an alliance with Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party.

The party, however, failed to profit from the alliance and ended up winning a measly seven seats of the 105 it contested across Uttar Pradesh. It also lost eight of ten seats in the Nehru-Gandhi bastions of Amethi and Raebareli.
