Software giant Google has no plans to make its own smartphone as of now and will continue
to work with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) on building the Nexus devices, said Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
Pichai was speaking at the Code Conference in California earlier this week, where he said that “the
plan is still to work with hardware partners.”
Nexus, we are investing more effort into them. You’ll see us put more thought into Nexus devices, there are categories beyond phones, we’ll be opinionated where we need to push the category forward. It is believed that if Google starts making phones on its own, then they could control the use and distribution of Android OS to its users.
Though Android’s openness has been exploited by phone makers, customers have to wait a while for the roll outs to reach their phones.
Today, Android has become one of the largest ecosystems in the world thanks to the company’s open approach to Android.
