Shakib Al Hasan became the first Bangladesh cricketer to score a half-century and pick a five-wicket haul in an ODI, leading his team to a 62-run win over Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup on Monday, 24 June.
After contributing a 69-ball 51 to Bangladesh’s total of 262/7, Shakib returned with figures of 5/29 in 10 overs to help bowl the Afghans out for 200 in 47 overs.
With this, the 32-year-old also became only the second player to achieve this feat at the World Cup. India's Yuvraj Singh was the only previous player to complete the half-century and five-wicket haul, achieving that against Ireland at the 2011 World Cup. Yuvraj won the player of the tournament award in 2011, when India won the World Cup title on home soil.
Shakib moved atop the tournament scoring list with 51 to take his tally to 476 runs, then took 5-29 to lift his tournament wicket tally to 10.
The all-round was involved from the fifth over on Monday, going to the crease at the fall of Bangladesh's first wicket.
He went on to post his sixth consecutive 40-plus score at the World Cup – he has two centuries – and he was the second-highest contributor to Bangladesh's total against Afghanistan after Mushfiqur Rahim's 83.
Taking wickets in three different spells, Shakib was the key contributor with the ball as Afghanistan was dismissed for 200, its seventh straight loss in the tournament.
He broke the partnership between Gulbadin Naib (47) and Rahmat Shah (24) to bring Bangladesh back into the game. He then picked up key wickets of Asgar Afghan (20) and Mohammad Nabi (0) to break the backbone of the Afghanistan chase.
Bangladesh ultimately won by 62 runs and it was Shakib who made the difference in the match.
Bangladesh, after this win, will face India next on 2 July in Edgbaston.
