Hima Das, who won gold in the 400 metre event at the U-20 IAAF Athletics World Championships, has received an outpouring of support on Twitter. She took to the micro-blogging site to thank people from various walks of life who have wished her well.
These included both the prime minister and president of India, as Hima became the first Indian track athlete to win a medal at any level of an international event – and she went and achieved first place.
And the 18-year-old’s remarkable humility shines through in her video message. Hima, who has only been competing in the 400 metres since March 2018, is the second Indian to win Gold at the U-20 IAAF World Championships. National record holder Neeraj Chopra accomplished the feat in javelin throw in 2016, which is a field event.
