Indian skipper Virat Kohli became the first Indian batsman to score a century in a day-night Test match for India at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, 23 November.
In the process, the 31-year-old scored his 27th Test century. Kohli reached the landmark with a double off spinner Taijul Islam in the 68th over. He scored his hundred off 159 balls, which included 12 fours.
The skipper was finally dismissed for 136 off 194 balls after Lunch on Day 2. It took a stunner from Taijul Islam near the boundary to send Kohli back. After his ton, the captain hit six more fours to take his tally to 18.
Kohli came in when India were 43/2 after India lost openers Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma early. The captain first put up a 94-run stand with Cheteshwar Pujara (55) and followed it with a 99-runs partnership with his deputy Ajinkya Rahane (51).
Equals Ponting's Record
This was Kohli's 70th hundred in international cricket. He is now just one short of equalling former Australia captain Ricky Ponting's tally of 71 hundreds in international cricket. Legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with 100 international tons.
It was also Kohli’s 20th Test century as captain and 41st international century while leading India. With this he equalled Australian great Ricky Ponting’s record of 41 international centuries as captain.
With the century, Kohli also surpassed Ponting’s tally of 19 Test tons as skipper.Only former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith has more centuries than Kohli with 25 tons to his name as captain.
Saturday's ton was Kohli's second against Bangladesh. His first Test century against the Bangladesh had come in 2017 when he had scored 204 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
This was also the second consecutive century for Kohli at the Eden Gardens. In 2017 when India played last against Sri Lanka in Kolkata, he had scored a 104* in the Test which ended in a draw.
On Friday, the Indian skipper had become the fastest batsmen to score 5,000 runs as captain. Kohli took 86 innings to get to the milestone, surpassing Ponting who took 97 innings to get there.
