An FIR has been registered against Mohammad Shami under sections of attempt to murder and torture. Based on his wife Hasin Jahan’s complaint of domestic violence and infidelity, the Kolkata Police booked Shami and four of his family members under various non-bailable and bailable sections. The cricketer’s brother has been also been booked with an additional charge of sexual assault.

The case was registered under non-bailable sections 307 (attempt to murder), 498-A (subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 376 (punishment for rape), Kolkata Police Joint CP (Crime) Praveen Tripathi said.

The five have also been booked under bailable sections 323 (causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) among others, he said.

On Thursday, 8 March, Hasin Jahan had also alleged that Shami was involved in match fixing to which the cricketer had responded saying he would “rather die than cheat his country”.

Addressing a press conference, Shami said:

I play for the country and I have always given my 100 percent in the games I have been given the chance. I will rather die than cheating my country.

According to his wife Hasin Jahan, the cricketer took money from a Pakistani woman named Alishba under the influence of England-based businessman Mohammed Bhai.

“If Mohammed Shami can cheat me then he can cheat the country as well. He accepted money from a Pakistani girl named Alisbah in Dubai. He agreed to accept it on the insistence of England-based Mohammed Bhai. I have proof,” Jahan told ABP.

Terming these allegations baseless, Shami said that Mohammed came from a “good family” and that he would never indulge in such activities.

The Bengal pacer said that his family has reached out to Jahan and have reportedly reached an agreement to discuss the allegations levelled against him.

Jahan also reportedly made allegations against Shami’s brother and mother saying that they wanted to kill her.

“Everyone in their family used to torture me. His mother and brother used to abuse me. The tortures continued till 2-3 am in the morning. They even wanted to kill me,” she told ABP.

Earlier on Wednesday, Jahan had accused Shami of domestic abuse and said that he used to beat her for quite some time. In a series of posts on Facebook, Jahan accused Shami of cheating on her. Jahan also said Shami used to beat her even after returning from South Africa.

On Wednesday, Jahan visited the Lal Bazaar police station in Kolkata with her lawyer to file a complaint against her husband.

Shami, however, remained calm about the issue and said he'll discuss it with his in-laws.

“Hasin(wife) and her family have been saying that we will sit and talk out all issues, but I don't know who has been misleading her. As far as allegation of compromising my performance playing for the country is concerned, I would rather die than do something like this,” he told ANI.

Jahan and Shami got married in 2014.
