The Indian batting line-up put up a much better performance as Virat Kohli fell three runs short of his century on Day 1 of the Third test against England at Trent Bridge on Saturday.

Chris Woakes (3/75) reduced India to 82/3 at Lunch after Joe Root had asked the tourists to bat at the toss but Kohli (97) and Ajinkya Rahane (81) put on 159 for the fourth wicket – India's first century-stand of the series – to take control.

However, England hit back in the final session as Alastair Cook took a stunning catch off the bowling of Stuart Broad (1/64) to dismiss Rahane.

Spinner Adil Rashid took only the one wicket but it was the most important dismissal for England with Kohli caught at slip by the recalled Ben Stokes.

James Anderson (1/52) then had Hardik Pandya caught by Jos Buttler with the final ball of the day to leave the match evenly poised at the close, though India will be encouraged by their batting display.

Rishabh Pant, a 20-year-old wicketkeeper making his debut, was unbeaten on 22.

India trail 0-2 in the five-match series after disappointing batting efforts led to defeats at Edgbaston and Lord's.

After an encouraging start as Lokesh Rahul (23) and the recalled Shikhar Dhawan (35) put on 60 for the opening wicket, it looked to be the same story once more for India as three wickets fell in quick succession before Lunch.

Woakes had Dhawan caught at slip, and then dismisses Rahul leg before wicket in his next over, before Cheteshwar Pujara (14) gifted England his wicket, hooking the last ball before the interval to Rashid at long leg.

Rahane joined Kohli at the crease after Lunch and the pair saw off England's pace attack, which included the wicket-less Stokes, who returned to the team in place of Sam Curran after being found not guilty of affray in a Bristol court.

The pair began to build momentum against a wayward Rashid and both batsmen were in the 50s when India reached 189/3 at Tea.

With England's bowling attack on the retreat, it was a batsman who helped them out.

Cook had little right to catch Rahane's edge low to his left at first slip, but stuck out his hand and saw the ball stick to break the partnership.

Meanwhile, Kohli appeared to be cruising toward his second century of the series before the struggling Rashid was brought on to pass a few overs as England waited for the second new ball.

Rashid seemed as surprised as anyone when Kohli edged an attempted drive to Stokes at slip, ending his innings on 97 from 152 balls.

Kohli's dismissal brought Test debutant Pant to the crease, who reaffirmed his attacking reputation by getting off the mark with a six straight back over Rashid's head.

India was on the verge of reaching the close with a slight but clear edge when Anderson got the reward his bowling deserved.

Pandya, who had already been dropped by Keaton Jennings off Broad's bowling, edged Anderson to Buttler at second slip.
