Currently, World Number 2 in the women’s doubles ranking, Sania, split with long time doubles partner Martina Hingis in August last year. This is the first Australian Open for the Mirza and Strycova together.

Runners-up at last week's Apia International in Sydney, Mirza-Strycova will next play the winner of the match between the French-Polish team of Alize Cornet and Magda Linette and the Japanese pairing of Eri Hozumi and Miyu Kato.
