Punjab is gearing up for elections. There is a lot of speculation around the electoral moves of major parties as the election result would set foundation for the 2019 general elections.

Amidst all the action, Navjot Singh Sidhu managed to grab attention by joining Congress. On Sunday, the cricketer-turned-politician took to Twitter to share the news.

Twitter was not impressed and people were quick to dig out Sidhu’s old posts in which he criticised Congress and the party’s vice-president in strong words.

At the centre of it all was an old video of Sidhu, in his good old BJP days, where he is seen taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi.

Comedy Days With Rahul?

But it was Sidhu’s meeting with Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi that created a laughing riot on Twitter. The pictures of the two leaders greeting each other became the butt of jokes.

People were seen altering the image with Sidhu’s image with Kapil Sharma from the show ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ in which Sidhu makes a regular appearance.

Here are a few tweets that had us in splits.

Some were even hurt by his decision as they saw it as an incident where a Sikh was siding with the party largely responsible for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Sidhu’s move also led people to point fingers at politicians who switch loyalties as per convenience.

Union Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal called Sidhu a ‘traitor’ . She said by joining Congress, Sidhu has betrayed his “mother party” which brought him into politics.

Taking a dig at Sidhu, she said that his pratice to laugh in the comedy show on the small screen has also helped him to make his own mockery.

She said that there was no danger to Akali Dal from Sidhu with his joining the Congress party since Sidhu has always remained an “aimless” politician.
