Shashi Tharoor has finally reacted to an online petition calling for the MP to be named as the UPA’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2019 general elections. The petition on Change.org, titled “Dr Shashi Tharoor as UPA's Prime Minister Candidate for 2019 elections” had more than 16,000 signatures by Friday morning.

In a Facebook post, Tharoor said that while he is “both surprised and touched” by the petition, he “neither supports or endorses” the campaign.

The petition was launched by a social media user from Thiruvananthapuram, from where Tharoor is the sitting MP.

I am a member of Parliament for the Congress Party, nothing more and nothing less. The party has a settled leadership, which is not up for debate. When changes occur they do so through an established procedure.

“I want to assure those who have nonetheless so generously expressed their faith in me that I share their aspiration for a better India, an aspiration that can best be given voice and expression through the Indian National Congress and the values it enshrines, and will continue to work towards realising our national destiny and upholding the principles that underpin this destiny,” he demurred on Facebook.
