A 79-year-old resident of Modinagar, Yogender Pal Singh, and his wife Atar Kali, had filed adoption papers to adopt Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 21 February, but it got rejected.

The rejection has left them very "hurt", Times of India reported. Yogender Singh said he had no agenda behind his decision, maintaining that Modi had called himself the son of UP.

Modi, who represents the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, had said in a rally the state was his 'mai-baap' (parents) and he will not desert it.

Modi's figurative expression yielded unforeseen results, when a member of Uttar Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights issued a notice asking him to support his claim with legal documents.

Yogender, who has also had a political career, said:

He (Modi) was snubbed by the child protection agency of UP, which hurt me immensely. So I came forward with my wife to adopt him. Modi has himself adopted a village in UP. He has asked his MPs from the state to adopt a village each and work for its development. No one questioned him on legal grounds at that point of time.
