Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Raheel Sharif has dismissed at least 11 high ranking army officials on corruption charges, according to media reports.

The fired officers include one lieutenant general, one major general, five brigadiers, three colonels and one major, according to Geo News. The decision is being hailed as a strong move.

Sources in the military suggest that the senior officers were dismissed after a long-running internal inquiry.

Lieutenant General Obaidullah Khattak and Major General Ijah Shahid are among those who have been stripped of their ranks.

The dismissals come on the heels of strong statements made by General Sharif about rooting out corruption in the country.

According to The Nation, he had stated two days ago:

Without ending corruption, Pakistan will not become peaceful and strong. The disease of corruption is destroying the roots of Pakistan.
