Former member of Pakistan’s National Assembly Syed Ali Raza Abidi was assassinated by two unidentified men in Karachi on Tuesday, 25 December, Dawn News reported.
A leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) political party of Pakistan, 46-year-old Abidi was killed after the assailants shot at his car near his residence in Karachi’s DHA neighbourhood.
Karachi police told Dawn News that Abidi was alone in his car when he was shot. He was taken to Karachi’s PNS Shifa hospital by his father, Akhlaq Abidi, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The site of the attack has been cordoned off by the police and an investigation is underway.
Who Was Abidi?
Abidi was an alumnus of marketing from Boston University. He also attended Iqra University in Karachi. He was the owner of the famous Karachi eatery, 'Biryani of the Seas'.
In November 2017, he had resigned from his National assembly seat after a fallout with the party leadership over a political alliance with another party.
He had resigned from MQM's basic membership citing "personal reasons" in September this year.
According to Dawn News, Abidi was one of the leaders who had stood with MQM leader Farooq Sattar in the buildup to 2018 elections when the party was subject to an internal power battle.
