Donald Trump took his first official action as US president on Friday, sending his Cabinet nominations to the Senate and calling for a ‘national day of patriotism’, his spokesman said.

Even in his inauguration speech, Trump invoked patriotism by saying “When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice,” after which he signed a proclamation for making 20 January the “National Day of Patriotic Devotion”.

His press secretary Sean Spicer announced the decision on Twitter.

“Our Constitution is written on parchment, but it lives in the hearts of the American people...proclaim January 20, 2017, as National Day of Patriotic Devotion, in order to strengthen our bonds to each other and to our country – and to renew the duties of Government to the people,” read the proclamation.

A lot of people were miffed after this decision was announced and compared it to similar ‘days’ declared by Fascists and autocratic rulers.
