The chorus for ending the VIP culture might’ve gained momentum over the years and even measures were taken up, including no beacon over vehicles, but a recent incident of halting traffic for a VIP almost jeopardised a child’s life.
An ambulance carrying a bleeding child was allegedly stopped for a few minutes near Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in central Delhi since the road was barricaded for VIP movement.
A video posted by a man on social media went viral that purportedly showed an ambulance stuck near the barricade while people were asking the police officials to let the ambulance go. Some were even heard asking officials that who would “take the responsibility if the child dies”.
In the video, the bystanders can be seen questioning the policemen whether “VIPs are more important than the life of a child who is bleeding”, as they urge the officials to let the ambulance go.
The route was blocked for public movement since Malaysia’s head of state was to pass from the area.
Police said they followed the protocol and it took a couple of minutes to let the ambulance go.
“The ambulance was stuck behind several cars. We got the passage cleared and brought it ahead. In a span of few minutes, it was allowed to go,” said a senior police officer.
