For over 60 years, Ayodhya has been at the epicentre of communal tension in India. The most recent development came just hours ago, when Hashim Ansari, the prime litigant in the case along with Akhara Parishad chief Mahant Gyan Das have proposed a solution to the long standing dispute.
Nimrohi Akhara, one of the organisations fighting the case on the Hindu side comes under the Akhara Parishad.
The compromise plan proposes the construction of a Mosque as well as a Ram Temple on the disputed 70-acre plot, with a 100-foot wall separating the two houses of worship.
True to form, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has raised objections. Claiming that the compromise was a sign of ‘moral bankruptcy’ the VHP said “This is not the first time that such a proposal has been floated. This type of conspiracy can never happen.”
Referring to the statement Mahant Gyan Das told journalists that the VHP was not party to the ‘peace process.’
Ansari and Das plan to get the assent of major religious leaders before presenting their compromise formula to the Supreme Court.
