The cyber crime cell of West Bengal Police arrested senior Congress leader of Bengal Sanmoy Bandyopadhyay reportedly for “critical remarks” against the ruling Trinamool Congress dispensation.
Bandyopadhyay was arrested from near his residence in West’s Bengal Sodepur in the North 24 Parganas district late on Thursday, 17 October. Leaders from West Bengal Congress said he was arrested for talking about the “misrule of the TMC government on Facebook and other social media platforms.”
“We will fight it politically and legally. Such arrests will not stop us from raising our voice against the misrule of Mamata Banerjee in Bengal,” said Congress state chief Somendra Nath Mitra, reported CNN News18.
The Congress party’s leader in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, also condemned his arrest.
“The arrest of Sanmoy Bandopadhyay is a classic example of intolerance of the highest order. Sanmoy was arrested from his home for criticising the state government. Such blatant attack on the freedom of speech and expression by the Trinamool Congress government will not stop us from protesting against the ruling dispensation.”Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to PTI
"We condemn such undemocratic assault on the freedom of speech and political terrorism unleashed by Mamata Banerjee government," Chowdhury added.
The West Bengal police is yet to confirm having arrested Bandyopadhyay.
His family claims that he was arrested by a police team from Purulia.
"They just came and took him away to Purulia on the charges of circulating posts against the state government," his brother, Tanmay Bandopadhyay, told PTI.
