The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a 12-hour bandh in West Bengal on Wednesday, 26 September, protesting against the death of two students during clashes with police in North Dinajpur’s Islampur on 20 September.

The two students were killed when protesters clashed with police over recruitment of teachers for Science, Urdu and other subjects at Daribhita High School in North Dinajpur district.

Buses Vandalised, Tyres Set On Fire

Government buses were vandalised in Cooch Behar. Protesters smashed windows of buses and burnt the bus tyres in Midnapore. Drivers of government buses wore helmets for safety.

Train Services Obstructed

Train services have been blocked by protesters on the Howrah-Bardhaman Main Line, Sealdah-Barasat Bongaon section of Eastern Railway Sealdah Division, Sealdah-Diamond Harbour Section, and Bandel Katwa section on Eastern Railways Howrah Division and several other parts of the state.

Clashes between TMC and BJP

TMC held protests against the 12-hour statewide bandh called by the BJP over the death of two students in North Dinajpur. Clashes broke out between BJP and TMC workers when the BJP workers were trying to obstruct movement of trains.

The TMC government has vowed to take stern action against those trying to enforce the bandh, while the BJP threatened of "repercussions" if the ruling party attempted to foil the stir.

Security Beefed Up Across The State

Security has been beefed up ahead of the shutdown, with as many as 4,000 police personnel on the streets. Police have arrested 24 people supportive of the bandh from Bagdogra and Naxalbari areas in Siliguri.
