Two militants, suspected to be belonging to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) outfit, were killed on Sunday during an encounter with the security forces in Handwara’s Waripora area, located in Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

The encounter happened around 4 pm, when the militants fired at a joint team of the police and the 21 Rashtriya Rifles after being surrounded, and to which the security forces retaliated.

Apart from the two militants, there were no other casualties, according to the police. The security personnel also seized two weapons from the encounter site.

Handwara superintendent of police Ghulam Jeelani was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying:

Both the militants are foreigners. We are trying to ascertain their identity. Since Lashkar-e-Taiba is active in the region, we suspect the militants are from the same outfit.
