The Quint has learnt from top sources within the Delhi police that Shashi Tharoor was questioned by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for hours on Saturday in connection with his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death.

He was questioned on the basis of a fresh medical report issued by AIIMS in January this year.

India Today reports that the Congress MP was asked about the source of the Alprax tablets they suspect Pushkar overdosed on. Tharoor was also questioned about the scuffle he reportedly had with his wife, the day before her death and the medication she was on. The police also asked about the injuries on her body.

Throughout the probe, a calm and composed Tharoor said he didn’t suspect foul play and said that the overdose was the cause of her death.

Six witnesses including Tharoor’s domestic help, Narayan Singh, driver Bajrangi and his friend Sanjay Dewan were subjected to lie detector tests.

Earlier, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi was under the impression that Pushkar’s death was not a natural one. The police are expected to file a chargesheet in the case later this month.

The FBI lab report listed possible causes of death as an overdose of either Alprax or Lidocaine. Strips of alprax were found near Pushkar’s body by investigators following her death at a five star hotel in south Delhi on January 17, 2014. The 16-page report said she died due to poisoning, but ruled out radioactive substances like Polonium or alcohol abuse.
