Will Verify All Pre-Paid Mobile Users in 2017: Govt Promises SC

The court asked the Centre to come up with a mechanism to verify identities of existing mobile users within a year.

  • The Centre on Monday told the Supreme Court that within a year, it will put in place an effective mechanism for the verification of pre-paid mobile users.
  • A bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice N V Ramana had asked that the verification of existing pre-paid mobile users, running into crores, be done within one year. The bench was hearing a plea filed by an NGO on the issue.
  • In addition to this, all new mobile phone subscribers have to fill up new Aadhaar based e-kyc forms to ensure correct identity, the government told the apex court.
