1. UK Home Secretary Approves Vijay Mallya’s Extradition to India

The Indian government moved closer to bring back fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya after UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid on Monday approved the liquor baron’s extradition to India, news agency PTI reported. The development comes after the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 9 December 2018, ordered Mallya’s extradition.

Mallya, who is facing charges of fraud, money laundering and violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), can appeal against the decision of the UK Home Secretary within 14 days of the order. In case no appeal is made, he will be extradited within 28 days.

2. Cab Driver Lured by Customers, Killed, Chopped Into Pieces

Two people were arrested on Sunday for allegedly killing a 32-year-old cab driver by luring him to their house in Ghaziabad. According to police, the accused, Farhat Ali (34) and a 30-year-old woman, strangled Ram Govind after lacing his drink with a sedative on the morning of 29 January. They then took his cab, a Hyundai Xcent, and drove to UP’s Moradabad.

After parking the car in front of a temple in Moradabad, police said the two returned to the Ghaziabad house, chopped Govind’s body into three pieces, and dumped it in a drain near Gaur City in Greater Noida.

“Following their arrests, they took us to the place where they had dumped his body. The head is still missing,” said a police officer.

3. Belgian Tourist Duped by Men Posing as Cops, Travel Agents

A trip to Delhi took a harrowing turn for a Belgian woman, who was allegedly harassed and duped by men posing as police officers, an autorickshaw driver, a travel agent and hotel authorities — all in a span of 24 hours.

The woman, Esther Deleu, arrived in the capital on 6 December last year and took an auto to her hotel, said police. When she reached Minto Road, the driver allegedly took her to a parking lot where two men, claiming to be police officers, were waiting. “They told me there were demonstrations taking place near my hotel and the entire street was cordoned off. They said I needed permission from police to get into the hotel,” Deleu’s complaint read.

“They told me to leave Delhi. They also spotted my gold jewellery and told me that I should take it off as it will cut my fingers,” the complaint read. When she told them about her reservation at the hotel, they made a call and told her it had been cancelled.

4. CBI Books Two Officers for Taking Bribe from Scam Accused

CBI on Sunday filed an FIR against two of its own officers for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to give a clean chit to three accused in the Rs 126-crore land scam at Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority.

In the FIR, the central agency has mentioned the names of VS Rathore, an inspector at the CBI’s anti-corruption board in Ghaziabad, and Sunil Dutt, an assistant sub-inspector at the CBI academy. It also mentioned Ranveer Singh, a former YEIDA tehsildar who allegedly paid the Rs 10 lakh bribe, and unnamed police officers.

On Sunday evening, the investigating agency summoned circle officer Nishank Sharma, who had been probing the land scam before it was transferred to the CBI last year, to its headquarters in Delhi for questioning. After a few hours, Sharma was transferred to the police headquarters in Lucknow, which the police termed a routine administrative shuffle.

5. Man Gets 7-Year Jail Term for Raping Minor

A special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act court on Monday convicted and sentenced a 22-year-old man to seven years imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.

Police said on 23 February 2016, she left home to “complete formalities” for scholarship money and did not attend school. When she did not return after school hours, her family panicked. When repeated calls to her went unanswered, they lodged a police complaint. Police said that on the evening of 25 February, he was brought to the police station. Her family told police that someone known to them had seen her in the vicinity and brought her home.

6. Six Men, Customs Officer Held With ₹1cr Goods

Two of six Indians, who were caught allegedly smuggling goods worth ₹1 crore, including drones, electronics, cigarette cartons and liquor, reportedly fled the airport terminal building on Friday morning.

The men, who had flown to Delhi from Dubai, were later arrested from outside the airport. A customs officer who had allegedly helped the men sneak in goods was also arrested.

Customs and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), that mans the airport security, had different versions of the incident.

The CISF said customs had detained six men around 7.20am at Terminal 3. “On being caught, the passengers argued with customs officials over paying duty. During the argument, three of them escaped the terminal. Following a scuffle, one of the passengers called the police. In turn, the customs also dialled 100 for assistance,” a CISF officer said.

7. Romanians Cloned ATM Cards on Gift Cards, Held

Five Romanian nationals, including two women, were arrested for alleged ATM fraud, police said.

Police said the suspects would install data skimmers and miniature cameras in ATMs to gather customers’ card details and steal their passwords.

They would then allegedly clone the cards and withdraw money or make purchases. Police said the suspects were arrested with 102 H&M gift cards onto which data was transferred to be used as ATM cards.

8. Man, Live-In Partner Arrested for Abducting, Killing Cabbie

A 34-year-old man and his live-in partner were arrested for allegedly abducting, drugging and strangulating a taxi driver on 28 January, police said on Monday.

The couple had cut the man’s body into three pieces before throwing it in a drain in Greater Noida, police said, adding that they killed the victim, Ram Govind, to steal his taxi and sell it to raise funds to start a clinic.

The decomposed body parts, which were stuffed in three separate gunny sacks, were recovered Sunday following the questioning of the arrested couple, Farhat Ali,34, and his live-in partner, Seema Sharma alias Aseeman Khatoon. They were living in a rented accommodation in Loni near Ghaziabad, police said, adding Ali is a quack.

9. 17-Yr-Old Killed in UP's Gonda, Body Found in Field

A 17-year-old boy was allegedly kidnapped and killed over an old enmity at a village in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district, police said Monday.

The incident happened in Ragi village in Tarabganj area of the district.

The boy, Mohit, was differently-abled and was allegedly kidnapped on Saturday by one Rajesh Singh, they said.

Mohit's body was found in a field on Sunday, officials said.

A case has been registered and efforts are underway to nab the accused, they added.
