Over 50,000 signatories led by NGO Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) have responded to a call against the contentious triple talaq system.

It comes in support to the National Commission for Women (NCW) in its campaign to end the “unQuranic practice.”

Of the 4,710 women interviewed in 10 states by BMMA, an overwhelming 92% want a total ban on oral or unilateral divorce. The notorious practice of ‘digitally’ divorcing wives using WhatsApp, Facebook, Skype or even over e-mails is considered legitimate.

The practice that advocates gender injustice and is used unscrupulously by the husband to get out of giving his wife alimony, leaving the wife to fend for herself and the children.

The BMMA has been advocating for a mediation over a 90-day period which should be given for reconciliation, as reported by The Times of India.

The Muslim personal law must be reformed in such a manner that all discriminatory practices are struck down as illegal and Muslim women’s constitutional and Quranic rights are safeguarded.

Previously, Shayara Banu, a woman who endured 15 years of marital rape and consequently 6-7 abortions, filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a ban on triple talaq.

Bader Sayeed, a lawyer, activist and a former lawmaker from Tamil Nadu impleaded in the Shayara Banu case, challenging the constitutional validity of the Shariat practice.

Abolishing the practice is a step toward unifying the civil code of the country. Up until now, conservative sections of Islam have thwarted attempts at quashing the system. Muslim women being citizens of India should be given equal status as other women in the country.
