A partner of the popular Parsi Dairy Farm was arrested on Thursday for allegedly cheating the owners by creating third party rights to a 300-acre ancestral plot owned by the family in Talasari on the Gujarat-Ahmedabad Highway.

Apart from arresting Utkarsh Naval Hayvoy, the Azad Maidan police have also booked his wife Amy and a Surat-based businessman, Jeevan Barwadia.

The complaint against them was lodged by Meher Patel, a member of the family running the Parsi Dairy Farm. According to the complainant, the accused had converted the plot from an agricultural plot to a non-agricultural land and sold parts of it after forging the power of attorney.

“We have got custody of Utkarsh Naval Hayvoy till April 23,” said Manoj Kumar Sharma, deputy commissioner of police, Zone 1. Hoyvoy is one of the eight partners of the dairy.

The Bombay High Court has warned the top officers of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the state Crime Investigation Department (CID) that they would be summoned to answer tough questions if the probes into the murders of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar and communist leader Govind Pansare doesn’t reach their logical conclusion.

On Thursday, a division bench of Justices SC Dharmadhikari and Bharati Dangre expressed strong displeasure over the fact that the absconding accused in the cases were not only identified, but their whereabouts in terms of which part of the country too had been ascertained, yet the agencies were not able to arrest them.

Senior advocate Ashok Mundargi, appearing for the CID in the Pansare murder case, almost conceded that the field investigations were not yielding any result, and that they were now more dependent on scientific investigations.“ Field probe, including raids at possible hiding places, will not lead to anything anymore. Our only hope is scientific probe and evidence from call detail records, forensics etc,” Mundargi said. Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, representing the CBI that is probing Dabholkar’s killing, was of the same view.

In a bid to escape from the police, a 19-year-old suspected motorcycle thief on Thursday jumped into the sea at Worli, only to be caught by local fishermen who chased him in a boat. He was later arrested from near the Bandra-Worli Sea Link after a two-hour chase.

The accused has been identified as Vigneshwar Vijay Jadhav, a resident of Shivaji Nagar in Worli. Police said under the influence of drugs, Jadhav had been stealing motorcycles for joy rides for about four months. “He recently stole a watch and a purse from a residence in Worli, following which, a woman lodged a complaint at the police station,” a Worli police station officer said.

Investigators said they had received a tip-off about a youth, who had allegedly been stealing bikes and valuables in the Worli police station area. “We showed her (complainant) a picture of the suspect… Following this, two constables were dispatched to Mahakali Nagar in Worli to arrest the accused. As the constables saw him, they called out his name… On seeing them, Jadhav started running,” said an officer.

A special CBI judge on Wednesday asked Indrani Mukerjea, an accused in the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora, not to have food from any stranger or outside the jail, as she is suspected of having overdosed on a drug recently.

Mukerjea fell unconscious in jail on April 6. While the chemical analysis report by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) at Kalina ruled out drug overdose and said it could be some other medical ailment, a screening test carried out at PD Hinduja hospital found significantly high level of an anti-depressant, benzodiazepine, in her urine samples.

Mukerjea was produced before the special CBI court on Wednesday, the first time after her hospitalisation. The court was scheduled to record deposition of her secretary Kajal Sharma.

Special judge JC Jagdale warned Indrani against taking food from outsiders, as the jail authorities suspect she was given food by someone in the court corridor. “Henceforth, don’t accept any food from any outsider. You can have food in jail and come to court. Further, if you require anything in court, you have to take the permission of the court and make arrangements.”

If everything goes according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s plan, you can soon get real-time updates of the calls made to the disaster management cell, to know how much time the agency will take to reach the site.

The BMC’s disaster management is framing rules for the initiative and plans to implement it soon through the Maharashtra government’s online SMS gateway.

According to the plan, once a caller notifies the disaster management of the BMC about any tragedy, the caller will get arrival updates from the response force till the issue is completely resolved.

Senior civic officials say the updates will keep callers aware of the situation. An official said, “The city’s congested lanes and daily traffic sometimes make it difficult for the rescue force to reach the site. Real-time updates will avoid panic. This will be implemented at no cost, as the messages will be sent through the state government’s online SMS gateway. The feature is still proposed and will be finalised soon.”

A casual trip to Masjid Bunder proved fatal for 20-year-old Mohammed Saif Abdul Ali Shaikh whose dead body was found on the railway tracks, just 100 metres from his home.

On Tuesday afternoon, Shaikh had gone with two friends to the garment market in Masjid Bunder. At 3.50pm, he boarded a Panvel-bound train from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. The patrolling staff reported a body lying between Wadala and Sewree at 4.40pm. Shaikh’s mobile phone was found nearby.

“We have registered a case of accidental death report. However, we are investigating to find out whether the boy fell off the train during non-peak hours or he was trying to cross the tracks. The station master in his statement told us that Shaikh was seen crossing the tracks when the accident took place,” said Ajit Baratake, senior police inspector of Wadala Government Railway Police (GRP).
