The Minister of State, Kiren Rijiju, has asserted his claim that India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru surrendered in the 1962 Indo-China war.

…Prime Minister of India Nehru stated that my heart goes out to the people of Assam. That amounted to surrendering of our territories to the Chinese.

The Chinese, Rijiju said, even claimed it to be a unilateral ceasefire before leaving.

The people who lived during the war, Rijiju claimed, are sad about India surrendering Assam.

When there was a debate in the Parliament of India about the Chinese aggression in Ladakh and Arunachal, Nehru said, in those barren land where not even a blade of grass grows, why Parliament is wasting it time? This statement pinched our hearts.

Rijiju went ahead to claim that the only opposition to Nehru’s views was that of Mahavir Tyagi, a Member of Parliament then, who asked if he should cut off his head if hair doesn’t grow on it.

To this, the chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, has issued a statement.

Does Nehru, who was a patriot to the core and a staunch nationalist, require a certificate from Rijiju who is a turncoat with no contribution to the development of his own state?

It is the patriotism of the people of Assam and AP which has still prevented them from leaving the country, he said.

Calling Congress intolerant, he asserted that the coming generation should know that the “former PM had caused heartburn to the people of this nation.”

Rijiju, who has his task cut out in the backdrop of growing intolerance, must focus on containing the divisive forces and not on rewriting history. It was during the Congress regime that Arunachal Pradesh was carved out and the state marched on the path of progress and prosperity.
