In an op-ed article for The New York Times, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has warned that a “direct military confrontation” with India “will get ever closer” if the world ignores the Kashmir issue.

In the NYT op-ed, Khan wrote: “If the world does nothing to stop the Indian assault on Kashmir and its people, there will be consequences for the whole world as two nuclear-armed states get ever closer to a direct military confrontation”.

A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Friday ordered Delhi Police Commissioner to send a team to Uttar Pradesh to escort the parents of the 23-year-old law student to the national capital. The young woman - who had put out a video message accusing BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand of “destroying the lives of several girls” - has told the judges that she did not want to immediately go back to Uttar Pradesh and preferred to stay in Delhi till her parents came.

She also told the judges that she had left Shahjahanpur with three family friends to protect herself.

Karnataka Congress’ chief troubleshooter DK Shivakumar appeared before the Enforcement Directorate in Delhi for being questioned in connection with a money-laundering case. The former minister faces arrest after his request for protection from arrest was rejected by the Karnataka High Court on Thursday. He was summoned by the probe agency last night after his petition challenging the summons was rejected by the Karnataka High Court.

"I am a law-abiding citizen. I have legal options which I am exploring," Mr Shivakumar said after landing in the capital.

4. Chidambaram, Questioned for 55 Hours, to Remain in CBI Custody till Monday

Former finance minister P Chidambaram, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the INX Media case, will continue to remain in the custody of the federal investigating agency till Monday, September 2, a Delhi court ordered on Friday. The judge, who initially remarked that the CBI’s request for more time to question Chidambaram appeared to be “vague”, later noted that the CBI required more time to question the Congress leader and confront him with other accused in the case.

The CBI had asked for Chidambaram’s custody for five days, till Wednesday.

5. NIA ‘Misreads’ Blood Test as Hawala, Summons Top Cardiologist

It began Friday as an NIA investigation into alleged hawala transactions between the country’s leading interventional cardiologist Professor (Dr) Upendra Kaul and Jammu and Kashmir separatist leader Yasin Malik. But it ended minutes later as a case of confusion over blood test results and abbreviations.

At 10.30 am Friday, Prof Kaul, who has been awarded the Padma Shri, was asked to explain text messages exchanged between him and his patient Yasin Malik that mentioned “INR 2.78”. The NIA, according to Prof Kaul, believed INR 2.78 was possibly connected to hawala transactions.

6. How You Can Check Your Name In Assam Citizens' List NRC

At 10 am today, the final Assam citizens' list will be published online, over a year after the first list that identifies whether a person is an Indian or a foreigner was released. The National Register of Citizens (NRC), first published in Assam in 1951, is being updated as per directions of the Supreme Court to segregate Indian citizens living in Assam from those who have illegally entered the state from Bangladesh after March 25, 1971.

The NRC Updation Assam, which is the official page of the Office of the State Coordinator of National Registration (NRC), Assam, has released a document on how one can check their name in the final NRC list.

Pakistani authorities on Friday ordered a probe into reports that a teenaged Sikh girl was allegedly kidnapped and forced to convert to Islam before being married to a Muslim man, with the incident sparking outrage on social media.

Chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab, Usman Buzdar, ordered the inquiry to determine whether the girl was in any way forced to convert. The inquiry followed reports that the girl was kidnapped and then made to marry a Muslim man at Nankana Sahib near Lahore, the capital of Punjab province.

8. 280 Law and Order Incidents in 3 Weeks, Srinagar Tops the List: J&K Police Report

In the three weeks since the removal of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and its bifurcation into two Union Territories, there have been around 280 law-and-order incidents across 10 districts of the Valley with more than 160 of these in Srinagar alone, according to an internal report of J&K Police accessed by The Indian Express.

At least 80 civilians have sustained pellet injuries in these incidents, official sources said, adding that two persons are currently undergoing treatment in hospitals.

9. Centre Should Have Brought Law Against Mob Violence: Mamata Banerjee

The West Bengal assembly on Friday passed a bill against mob violence. The West Bengal (Prevention of Lynching) Bill, 2019 was tabled in the House on Friday and supported by the Opposition Congress and CPI(M).

The BJP, which has emerged as the main opposition party, neither supported nor opposed the bill as it felt that the legislation may be used for settling political scores.

"Lynching is a social evil and all of us have to come together to fight against this evil. The Supreme Court has given direction to take action against lynching," Ms Banerjee said while speaking on Bill in the House.
