1. 6-10 Pak Soldiers, Terrorists Killed in Counter-Fire, Says Army Chief
Hours after the Indian Army destroyed terror launch pads and Pakistan Army posts in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in a retaliatory attack against ceasefire violation, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Sunday said around six to ten Pakistani soldiers and as many terrorists have been killed in the action.
“Last evening an attempt was made in Tangdhar to infiltrate terrorists, we retaliated, Pakistan carried out attack firing at our post in which we did suffer, but before they could attempt the infiltration it was decided that we target that terror camps across,” news agency ANI quoted Rawat as saying.
“So far, as per the information available with us, 6-10 Pakistani soldiers have been killed and nearly as many terrorists. Three terror camps have been destroyed and on the fourth one also, we have caused severe damage,” PTI quoted Rawat as saying.

2. NDA, Oppn in First Electoral Face-Off Since LS Polls
Maharashtra and Haryana will vote for assembly elections on Monday, reviving the face-off between arch-rivals BJP and Congress just five months after Narendra Modi returned as PM with a huge mandate. It will be a test of the ruling party’s continuing popularity and the mauled opposition’s resilience. Results will be announced on Thursday. By-elections in 51 assembly and two Lok Sabha constituencies are also being held across 18 states.
In 288-seat Maharashtra, the contest is between the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition against the bloc formed by Congress and NCP while Haryana is a clash between BJP and Congress with the fledgling JJP, an offshoot of INLD of Om Prakash Chautala, thrown in the mix.

3. Police Seize Bloodstained Clothes of Kamlesh Killers
The police on Sunday said they seized items, including bloodstained clothes, belonging to the suspects in the murder of Kamlesh Tiwari, a Hindu group leader in Uttar Pradesh, even as Tiwari’s family members handed a list of 11 demands to chief minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow and separately demanded capital punishment for the killers.
Tiwari’s mother, wife and two sons spent around 30 minutes with the CM at his official residence in Lucknow on the day the police raided the Khalsa Inn hotel in the Lalbagh area of Lucknow where the suspects, who are on the run, were allegedly staying.
“According to the hotel staff, the two had identified themselves as Sheikh Ashfaqul Hussain and Moinuddin Pathan. On the day of murder, both of them had left the hotel, wearing saffron kurta, and there was a box of sweets in their hand,” director general of police OP Singh said.

4. Eight Pilgrims Killed in Uttarakhand Landslide
Eight pilgrims were killed after their vehicles were hit by boulders and fell into a deep gorge at Chandikadhar area of Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand late Saturday night. They were on their way to Rudraprayag from Sonprayag.
“Eight people, travelling in a car and two motorcycles, were killed when their vehicles plunged into a 500-metredeep gorge after being hit by boulders. We recovered eight bodies after a seven-hourlong operation,” Rudraprayag district magistrate Mangesh Ghildiyal said on Sunday.
The accident took place when a heavy boulder fell along with the rubble of a landslide on the vehicles, police said, adding five were killed on the spot while three died of injuries at hospital.

The parties arguing for a mosque at the disputed Ayodhya site have urged the Supreme Court to bear in mind that its judgment in the case would have far-reaching implications, and urged it to “mould” the relief in such a manner that it reflects “constitutional values”.
“Since the judgment of this Court will have far-reaching implications, it is for the Court to consider the consequences of its historic judgment by moulding the relief in a fashion that will reflect the constitutional values that this great nation espouses… we hope that the Court, in moulding the relief, upholds our multi-religious and multicultural values in resolving the issues confronting it,” the seven mosque parties said Sunday in a joint, one-page statement on the question of ‘moulding’ of the relief.

6. In 2 Letters, Boris Gives Mixed Signals on Brexit Deadline
Bruised by Saturday’s defeat in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Boris Johnson sent two contradictory letters to the European Union: one, to ask to extend the Brexit deadline of October 31 as the law requires, and another to argue against the same extension.
The unseemly missives to Brussels – called ‘silly’ and the work of a ‘spoiled brat’ by critics – were prompted by the law enacted in September that forces the government to seek the extension if a Brexit agreement is not passed in the House by 11 pm on October 19.
The Johnson government suffered a major setback on Saturday when an amendment was passed to ensure that parliament withholds approval of the prime minister’s Brexit deal reached last Thursday until the withdrawal bill implementing Brexit has been passed. it was seen by Johnson and ministers as a way of further delay Brexit.

7. Letters ‘Put on Hold’ as Pakistan Stops Mail from India for the First Time
Even through Partition, three wars, and extended tension, and despite the circuitous route involving the Middle-East, one service did not stop between India and Pakistan. In the wake of abrogation of Article 370 however, Pakistan has stopped postal mail between the two countries.
It’s been more than one-and-a-half months since Pakistan last accepted a consignment from India, on August 27, forcing the Indian postal authorities to put mail marked for the country “on hold”. Said R V Chaudhary, the Director of Postal Services (Mail and Business Development), Delhi, “It was a unilateral decision on their part. This is the first time they have taken such a stand… We are not sure when the order will be lifted.”

8. Stephen’s Professor, Mother Found Dead
A 27-year-old adhoc assistant professor of Delhi University’s St Stephen’s College was found dead at the railway tracks near Sarai Rohilla station on Saturday afternoon. Around half-an-hour later, the man’s 55-year-old mother was found hanging at their flat in northwest Delhi’s Pitampura, the police said.
Police said the mother-son duo originally belonged to Kerala. They added that the duo was facing an abetment to suicide case, filed at a police station in Kerala reportedly by the family of the woman’s husband’s former wife. Police investigation has revealed that the woman’s husband had allegedly killed himself in December last year. Although, the mother-son duo had secured anticipatory bail in the case, they were depressed because of it, the police said.

9. Assaults, Murder of Journalists: YSRCP Men Named in 4 FIRs
While the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has refused to take up a proposal by a state minister to initiate legal action against news reported with “mala fide intentions”, leaders of the ruling YSR Congress Party have been accused of unleashing attacks on mediapersons who are seen to be critical of them, or of the state government.
The latest — and most serious — of these attacks took place on October 15, when a reporter of Andhra Jyothi newspaper was hacked to death while on his way home in the evening. Three days later, police registered an FIR against YSRCP MLA and party Chief Whip in the Assembly, Ramalingeshwara Rao Dadisetti, in the journalist’s killing.
