The Cabinet on Wednesday approved an ordinance to criminalise instant triple talaq, the Muslim practice of immediate divorce, a move which follows the government’s efforts to pass a bill to that effect in Parliament’s last session.

The proposed ordinance — which takes effect as soon as the President approves it — will make instant, arbitrary divorce by a Muslim man a crime, but has provisions for reconciliation and bail.

2. Mohan Bhagwat’s Silence on Golwalkar Telling: Edits Anti-Muslim Remark

Madhav Sadasiva Golwalkar (popularly known as Sri Guruji), the second and the longest-serving chief of the RSS credited with widening the RSS’s footprints in post-Independent India, did not find any mention among 32 personalities referred to by the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat during the two days of his lecture series on the future of India.

The series was held to ostensibly explain the RSS and to allay what it called “misperceptions” regarding the organisation.

3. Hyderabad: Woman Attacked by Father for Marrying Outside Caste, Critical

A 21-year-old woman was critically injured on Wednesday when her father hacked her with a sickle in a suburb of Hyderabad for marrying outside their caste after luring the couple to meet him for buying new clothes, police said.

Madhavi was attacked at around 4pm in Erragadda on the busy Hyderabad-Mumbai highway, suffering serious injuries on her neck and hand. Her husband Billa Navdeep, 24, from Premnagar Colony of Erragadda was injured in his face and neck.

4. Pakistan Court Orders Release of Ousted PM Nawaz Sharif and His Daughter

A Pakistani court on Wednesday ordered the release of jailed former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law, suspending prison sentences given by a lower court pending the hearing of their appeals.

The Islamabad High Court’s order came as a reprieve for Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Muhammad Safdar, who had been incarcerated since July 13 after an accountability or anti-corruption court found them guilty of corrupt practices linked to the Sharif family’s ownership of upscale London flats.

5. Names, Photos, Id: First Registry of Sex Offenders Out Today

India is all set to roll out the National Registry of Sexual Offenders on Thursday, and will become the ninth country in the world to set up and maintain such a database. The Indian registry will include names, photographs, residential address, fingerprints, DNA samples, and PAN and Aadhaar numbers, of convicted sexual offenders.

Official sources told The Indian Express that the database will contain more than 4.5 lakh cases, including profiles of first-time and repeat offenders, based on details compiled from prisons across the country. The offenders will be classified on the basis of criminal history to ascertain if “they pose a serious danger to the community”.

6. Arrest of Activists: Opposition and Bid to Overthrow Govt Are Different Things, Says Supreme Court

Observing that a “clear-cut distinction” should be made “between opposition and attempts to create disturbance and overthrow governments”, the Supreme Court Wednesday said that it would look at the Maharashtra Police’s material on the Bhima-Koregaon case with a “hawk’s eye”.

The bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud also extended till Thursday the house arrest of five activists and lawyers even as the Maharashtra police defended the arrests.

7. Congress to Fight Local Polls in Jammu and Kashmir Amid Boycott Calls

The Congress on Wednesday announced its participation in the local bodies’ elections being held in Jammu and Kashmir from October to December days after saying the situation was not conducive for the polls amid a spike in militant violence in the state.

“We cannot leave the field open for the BJP and the RSS,’’ said state Congress chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir.

9. Pakistan Army May Have Slit BSF Jawan’s Throat

A day after a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was killed along the Jammu border after he and his team came under unprovoked firing from Pakistan, a photograph emerged suggesting his throat had been slit.

A senior official told The Hindu that they did not rule out the role of the Border Action Team (BAT) of the Pakistan Army that had in the past beheaded jawans along the Line of Control.
