Saudis Couldn't Stop Oil Attack, Even With Top US Defences

Saudi Arabia spent billions to protect a kingdom built on oil but could not stop the suspected Iranian drone and missile attack, exposing gaps that even America's most advanced weaponry failed to fill.

In addition to deciding whether that firepower should be turned on Iran in retaliation, the Saudis and their American allies must now figure out how to prevent a repeat of last weekend's attack - or worse, such as an assault on the Saudis' export facilities in the Persian Gulf or any of the desalination plants that supply drinking water.

Saudi Oil Attacks an ‘Act of War’, Says Pompeo

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo denounced strikes on Saudi Arabia's oil infrastructure as an "act of war" Wednesday, as Riyadh unveiled new evidence it said showed the assault was "unquestionably" sponsored by arch-foe Iran.

“This was an Iranian attack,” Pompeo told reporters on his plane before landing in the western city of Jeddah, calling it “an act of war”.

Sweeping US Sanctions on Iran Target Leaders, Oil and Trade

Ongoing US sanctions on Iran target Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the Islamic republic's top brass, while also seeking to choke trade in a variety of goods from oil to carpets.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday promised details of new sanctions within 48 hours in response to a missile or drone attack on Saudi oil facilities that Riyadh has blamed on Iran.

New sanctions imposed in June built on a series of previous ones.

Japan Court Acquits Ex-TEPCO Executives over Fukushima Disaster

A Japanese court on Thursday acquitted three former officials from the firm that operated the Fukushima nuclear plant, in the only criminal trial to stem from the 2011 disaster.

The three former executives from Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) had faced up to five years in prison if convicted of professional negligence resulting in death and injury.

The court is expected to explain its reasoning for the ruling shortly.

In the wake of the verdict, dozens of protesters including some from the Fukushima region, who had gathered before the session began, expressed shock.

The CBI has asked the West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) to provide the contact details of former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar, sources said on Thursday.

A letter in this regard was sent to the top cop of West Bengal, seeking a phone number of Kumar on which he could be contacted, they added.

The CBI has set up a special team to trace Kumar, who allegedly "evaded" the agency's notices to appear before it in connection with the Saradha Ponzi scheme case, the sources said.

US Accuses Afghan Govt of Not Fighting Corruption, Cuts Aid

The United States on Thursday accused Afghanistan's government of failing to fight corruption and cut more than USD 160 million in direct funding, little over a week before the country's elections.

"We stand against those who exploit their positions of power and influence to deprive the Afghan people of the benefits of foreign assistance and a more prosperous future," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.

Potential of India-US Trade to Double in Five Years: Ambassador Shringla

The bilateral trade between India and America has the potential to double and reach USD 280 billion in the next five years, India's top diplomat in the US has said, amidst intense negotiations between the two countries to resolve their trade differences.

In March, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer announced that the US will terminate India's designation as beneficiary developing country under the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) programme.

India imposed retaliatory tariffs on 28 US products including almonds and apples from 5 June, after the Trump administration revoked its preferential trade privileges.
