1. Many Indians Detained in US Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants

Several people from South Asia, including many Indians, are among those detained by US immigration authorities at a federal prison in Oregon for illegally entering the country.

The Donald Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy on illegal immigration has resulted in sweeping enforcement measures such as separation of children from their families.

The Indian Embassy in the US is trying to ascertain the reports, and to contact the detained people before planning a course of action, an official told The Hindu.

2. RTI Activist Shot Dead in Bihar

A Right to Information (RTI) activist, who had exposed several discrepancies in the Indira Awas Yojana, teachers’ appointment and Life Insurance Corporation, was shot dead in Bihar’s East Champaran district on Tuesday, 19 June, police said. A case has been lodged against five named and seven unknown persons.

Rajendra Singh (60), a resident of Rajpur village, was shot dead near Mathwanwari Chowk under Piprakothi police station around 1 pm while he was returning home on a motorcycle, police said. Last year, some unidentified men had tried to run over Singh.

3. 6-Month-Old Boy Branded with Hot Iron Bangles by Family in Odisha

A six-month-old child was allegedly branded with a hot iron bangle by family members to cure him of pneumonia at Khutiguda village under Papadahandi block in Nabarangpuir district on Monday, 18 June, reports stated on Tuesday.

The infant was admitted to the Nabarangpur District Headquarters Hospital with severe injuries on his abdomen, thighs and feet.

“Parents of the child did not take him to any hospital and instead tried to heal him with traditional method. Even when condition of the child deteriorated, they branded him with a hot iron bangle,” said Dr Sarat Kumar Behera at the DHH.

4. Sexual Harassment Allegations at IIT-Bombay, No Action Against Senior Students

Sexual abuse in higher educational institutions continues to be a matter of grave concern. A first-year engineering student of IIT, Bombay, alleged that he was abused by a senior who would generally target freshers and stated that he had complained about the incident to the Dean. However, there was allegedly no response and no action was taken against the senior student.

The ‘confession’ which was posted online was retweeted several times, even by alumni who sought a quick and speedy action.

5. Manjula Shetye Murder Case: Charges Framed Against Six Byculla Jail Staffers

Six staffers of Byculla women’s jail have been charged under sections, including murder and criminal conspiracy, for the alleged murder of jail inmate Manjula Shetye in June last year. A sessions court on Tuesday, 19 June, framed charges against the six accused, currently employed in Thane women’s jail.

The six staffers — including jailor Manisha Pokharkar, and prison guards Vasima Shaikh, Bindu Naikode, Surekha Kakad, Shital Shengaonkar and Arti Shingane — were arrested for the assault of Shetye inside the jail on 23 June 2017.

On Tuesday, 19 June, based on the proposed charges made out against the six by the prosecution, the court read out the charges to the six accused.

6. Rape-Accused God-Man Questioned

Self-styled god-man Daati Maharaj on Tuesday, 19 June, joined the investigation into the rape case registered against him following a complaint by a former disciple.

He visited the Crime Branch office in the afternoon and was questioned for nearly four hours before being allowed to leave, a senior police officer.

Stating that the accused will be called for questioning again, the office said, “A team had visited his residence in Rajasthan but did not find him there. Summons were issued to him to join the probe by Wednesday.”

7. Man Plots Acid Attack on Wife, Mother-In-Law Falls Victim

A husband’s sinister plot to attack his wife with acid with the help of two ‘supari killers’ went awry as the men attacked his mother-in law instead in Kanchanbagh in Hyderabad, Telangana.

According to police, Khadeer Beig was angry as his wife refused to come back from her mother’s place to celebrate Eid.

“Khadeer Beig was an auto driver and an alcoholic. He would often pick up fights with his wife for no reason. Disturbed by her husband’s behaviour, she left for her mother's house. Tabassum also decided to get a divorce from Khadeer Beig which he rejected. He then asked his wife to return home to celebrate Eid and she refused, following which he plotted to attack her,” said police inspector of Kanchan-bagh N Shankar.

8. Man Held on Charge of Killing Son

The Tiruvottiyur police cracked the murder of Mohammed Hussain, 25, whose body was found near a school on 10 June. The deceased was the son of one Navasudeen, and resident of Second Street, Ambedkar Nagar.

Investigation revealed that Navasudeen had murdered Hussain. Navasudeen told the police that his son was mentally ill and was getting violent by the day.

So, when his wife had gone out of station, Navasudeen killed his son and dumped his body near the school. The police arrested Navasudeen and remanded him to judicial custody.

9. Six Nabbed for Murder of 22-Year-Old

Six men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 22-year-old man, which took place on 17 June at J C Nagar in Bengaluru.

The victim, Manikantha, was a resident of Kamalanagar. According to the police, the day he was murdered, he had been in a fight with his friend Shivaji while they were playing cricket on a skating ground in the locality.

Later, around 6:15 pm, Shivaji allegedly ganged up with his friends and attacked Manikantha with a machete and other sharp objects. The Mahalakshmipuram police took up investigation based on a complaint from the victim’s mother.
