1. Woman Undergoes Rare Surgery, Gets Third Kidney Transplant
When Sudipta Mandal’s kidney started to fail for the third time in 16 years, the family knew that only another transplant could save the 32-year-old. But with no matching donor in her immediate family, time was running out for the Haldia resident. That is when the doctor who had conducted Sudipta’s second surgery suggested an ABO incompatible (non-matching) transplant since her mother was willing to donate.
On 4 June, Mandal underwent surgery at Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS), the only hospital in state that conducts ABO incompatible transplant – where donor and recipient have different blood groups.

2. Crack In Windshield Forces Flight to Return
A Bengaluru-bound IndiGo Airlines flight returned about an hour after takeoff on Sunday when the pilot detected a crack in the windshield. The flight with 178 passengers on board landed safely after a standby emergency was declared at the airport.
Flight 6E 345 took off from Kolkata at 9:45a m. Around 10:10 am, the captain contacted the air traffic control and requested permission to return to Kolkata citing a crack in the windshield. The aircraft was then flying at an altitude of 15,000 ft - 20,000 ft and had travelled around.

3. With Clouds to Help, Sky Is The Limit For These Tribal Kids
Twenty friends, all successful professionals, taught 30 Santhal kids on distance mode for two years, keeping a goal in mind — Madhyamik 2018. All have scored beyond 60%, with the highest scorer having gone beyond 80% — both in aggregate and also in English. This was the first time that the Santhal kids were allowed to write in Olchiki.
With their cloud teaching experiment having been pulled off so well, the group is on cloud nine. The friends, settled across the globe, came together in 2012 and decided to found a platform, EducateOneKid. They kept aside a portion of their earnings to buy stationery and reading material for underprivileged kids in the tribal zones of Bengal.

4. Imams Click On Social Media To Fight Fake News, Spread Harmony
Several imams, or clerics, are embracing social media in the hope that it will help them address misinformation and strengthen communities in the virtual world, and also help them contextualise their discourse in changing times.
Shafique Qasmi of Nakhoda Mosque joined Facebook last year with the objective of promoting peace and harmony. “If there is something good in the virtual world in terms of a deed or philosophy which promotes peace, harmony and brotherhood, I share it with others. If I come across any misinformation, I try to rectify it and if I come across something objectionable, I condemn it,” he said.

5. Arrest In Purulia Hanging Death
A middle-aged man said to be a Trinamul Congress worker and not named in the FIR has been arrested for the murder of BJP member Trilochan Mahato, who was found hanging from a tree in Purulia on 30 May.
Punjabi Mahato, 45, is the first person to be arrested in connection with the murder of Trilochan, 20.
CID officers rounded up Punjabi from the same village where Trilochan used to live - Supurdih in Balarampur block - on Sunday.

6. Tidal Swell Sucks In Siblings From City
A brother and sister were killed and one person was injured when they went to bathe in the sea at Mandarmani during high tide on Sunday afternoon.
Siblings Arka Chakraborty, 32, and Alolika Chakraborty, 30, were sucked in by a large tidal swell after they wandered into the deep waters.
They were from Malda's Englishbazar but lived in Baghajatin, Calcutta.
Their friend Uddalak Bhattacharya, 32, who lives in Barasat and works for a Calcutta-based Bengali newspaper, survived with injuries. Bhattacharya has been admitted to Contai Sub-divisional Hospital.
He has regained consciousness and is stable, a doctor at the hospital said.
A fourth person in the group, a woman in her 30s who lives in Baghajatin, did not get into the water and watched the accident from the beach. She, however, refused to say anything.

7. Tech Varsity Calls For Skill Upgrade Test
The state technical university that regulates engineering colleges in Bengal has asked them to hold exams for first-year BTech students in English, physics, chemistry and math to identify weak spots and arrange remedial classes.
In a letter to colleges on June 17, the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology said the move was aimed at increasing the "employability" of students.
The university took the step almost three weeks after education minister Partha Chatterjee said the government would seek past placement records of private engineering colleges and advise those producing "too many unemployable engineers" to shut down.
