The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student who was found dead on Tuesday night died due to overconsumption of liquor, said a senior police office, referring to the autopsy conducted on him on Wednesday.

The deceased, identified as JR Philemon Chiru – also known as Phil Chiru among his friends – belonged to Senapti district in Manipur. His body was found in room number 171 of the Brahmaputra Hostel.

“Philemon was addicted to alcohol. It looks as if he collapsed after consuming alcohol and died,” the officer added.

Philemon was a 31-year-old PhD student in the university, pursuing West Asian Studies and was reportedly not seen outside his room since the last three days, a senior police official said.

“When a foul smell started emanating from the room, the student in the neighbouring room called other students and security and forcefully opened the door. He was found dead in the room,” added.

His body has been preserved at AIIMS mortuary for postmortem and further investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of death.

Source have told The Quint, that Philemon had been struggling with liver and health issues, which coupled with alcohol, that could possibly be the cause of his death. They are also not suspecting foul play at this point.
The deceased had a history of alcoholism. There seems no foul play done, prima facie, and it seems like a natural death.
