Video of Sudha Murty Aiding Kerala Flood Relief Efforts Goes Viral

Murthy sets an example by packing the material herself, while supervising the work of other volunteers.

A video of author and philanthropist Sudha Murty packing relief material has gone viral on social media for all the right reasons. The unassuming wife of co-founder Narayan Murthy sets an example by packing the material herself, while supervising the work of other volunteers.

The viral video shows a room with packets of relief material – all embossed with Infosys logo. The 68-year-old is seen opening a carton, passing on material to others who are seated, and overseeing the packing process. She then proceeds to help pack material herself. The video has been shared on Twitter by many including Union Minister DV Sadananda Gowda, who all have praised her humility and her desire to help people.

Sudha who is the Chairperson of Infosys Foundation and also one of the richest women in the country, is an active supporter of rural education, public hygiene, and poverty alleviation.

This video comes in the wake of another viral video where HD Revanna, brother of Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and Minister for Public Works is seen throwing biscuit packets at flood survivors in Hassan district.

While the Opposition BJP was quick to hit out at Revanna for his “arrogant act”, several social media users called out the PWD Minister for being insensitive to those affected by the floods. However, Chief Minister Kumaraswamy defended his brother stating that there had been no space in the relief camp for Revanna to distribute the packets.

The rains that triggered floods and landslides in Kodagu district in Karnataka have claimed the lives of 12 people since 12 August, while reducing villages, roads and houses to rubble. With the sun finally shining on Monday, the rehabilitation process has begun.

In Kerala, the scale of devastation has been much larger, with the death toll at over 350, and over a lakh people displaced.

Organisations and individuals have pitched in from across the country to reach help people in distress. All MLAs, MPs and MLCs in the state have pledged to donate their salaries for the cause of rehabilitation. Similarly, police officials, state transport officials have also pledged one day’s salaries for the same cause.
