1. Woman Gangraped in UP's Unnao, Three Arrested

Police lodged an FIR after a video emerged on social media on Thursday showing a group of men molesting a woman and dragging her to an orchard, later established to be in Unnao district, and allegedly raping her. Three men have been arrested in the case.

According to the police, the woman had not come forward to lodge a complaint in connection with the incident, which occurred around two months ago. The video, the police said, had been shot by one of the accused and circulated on social media.

2. 26 Minor Girls Rescued From Train After Passenger Alerts Railways With a Tweet

Twenty six underage girls were rescued by the GRP and RPF from the Muzaffarpur-Bandra Awadh Express after a tweet from a passenger alerted them to the situation.

On 5 July, a passenger on board the train tweeted thathe was travelling in the S5 coach of the train and noticed around 25 girls crying and looking uncomfortable.

Reacting to the tweet, officials in Varanasi as well as Lucknow swung into action and within half an hour of the alert on social media site started investigating the matter, a railway spokesperson said.

3. Bihar Girl Alleges She Was Raped by Principal, 2 Teachers, 15 School Mates

A class 9 student of a private school in Bihar’s Saran district alleged on Friday, 6 July she was raped by 18 persons including her schoolmates, two teachers and the principal over the last eight months. She said she did not report the abuse fearing society would ostracize her.

The girl approached police superintendent Har Kishore Rai with the complaint on Friday morning. Police later arrested Uday Kumar alias Mukund Singh, the principal of the private school in Saran’s Parsagarh village, teacher Balaji and two minor students of the school. The girl was sent to a local hospital for a medical check-up and police are searching for the other accused.

4. Tamil Nadu Filmmaker Claims Harassment by Cops, Madras HC Says No Arrest Until 16 July

Ostensibly wanted by the police for questioning ahead of the release of her documentary film ‘Orutharum Varela’ (Nobody Came), K Divya Bharathi on Friday, 6 July got temporary relief from arrest after the Madurai bench of Madras High Court ordered the state police not to arrest her until 16 July.

The documentary focusses on the impact of Cyclone Ockhi, which devastated the coasts of southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala in December last year, and purported failure of the government machinery in rescue operations.

5. Woman Tied to Tree, Beaten up on Orders of UP Panchayat

A woman was allegedly tied to a tree and beaten up on the orders of a panchayat in a village in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, over an “illicit relationship” with her brother-in-law’s son, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Thursday in Toda village under Ratenpuri police station in the district and came to light after a purported video of the “punishment” went viral on the social media, circle officer Hariram Yadav said.

6. Held for Allegedly Killing Armyman’s Wife: Major Alleges Beaten up on Way to Tihar

Army officer Major Nikhil Rai Handa, accused of murdering another Army Major’s wife, moved an application in a city court, alleging he was “beaten up” in a prison van en route to Tihar Jail. The alleged incident took place on 3 July, when he was last produced in Patiala House Court.

Lawyer Sanjeev Sahay, who represents Handa, alleged, “He was beaten up by some inmates and it seems there is a bigger issue involved. We have moved an application raising his security concerns and asked for a separate cell and van for his transportation.”

7. Villagers Want to Ostracise Family of Man Accused of Raping 4-Year-Old

Representatives of various communities of a village under the Sumel Panchayat Samiti have demanded that the family of Pavan Raigar, who is accused of raping a four-year-old girl, be ostracised.

“Two days after the horrible incident, a meeting was held at the Sumel Gram Panchayat Samiti Bhavan on Thursday. Representatives of various communities and common people were present in the meeting. During the meeting, various community representatives demanded to ostracise the family of Pavan Raigar,” said Madan Lal Gurjar, the sarpanch of Sumel Gram Panchayat

8. Toll Booth Staff Prevents Bengaluru Ola Cab Driver From Abducting Woman Passenger Going to Airport

Staff at a toll booth on the highway to Hyderabad from Bengaluru prevented the abduction of a 25-year-old woman by the driver of a taxi she was travelling around 2 2 AM on Thursday, 5 July. She had booked the vehicle on aggregator platform Ola

The driver, Suresh, was arrested by the Chikkajala police, who said the woman had booked the taxi from Banaswadi to the Kempegowda International Airport.

The woman told the police that she was scheduled to go to Mumbai on work and booked the cab. However, as the vehicle approached the airport toll gate, the inebriated driver suddenly changed lanes and began driving towards Hyderabad.

9. Missionaries of Charity Home Staff Held for Selling Children

A woman employee and in-charge of a shelter home for minor girls run by Missionaries of Charity in Ranchi’s Kotwali have been arrested for alleged involvement in selling children. The Ranchi unit of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has referred the matter to police and an FIR has been registered.

Missionaries of Charity Superior General Sister Prema Friday issued a statement that the Kolkata headquarters was “shocked” and that they are looking into the matter. On Friday, 6 July, the CWC took into its custody 13 minor girls and 22 children lodged in two centres run by Missionaries of Charity.
