QCrime: Two Held in Ludhiana Gangrape Case; Twins Abducted in MP

1. Ludhiana Gangrape: Two Arrested, Three More Identified by Police

Three days after a 20-year-old student was gangraped allegedly by 10 men after she and her male friend were waylaid on Changna Bridge on South City road in Ludhiana late on Saturday, 9 February, rural police arrested two accused on Tuesday, 12 February, and identified three more.

Ludhiana range DIG Ranbir Singh Khatra told The Indian Express that prime accused Sadiq Ali (24), a resident of Rehpa village in Mukandpur police station area of Nawanshahr district, and Jagroop Singh (30) from Jaspal Bangar of Ludhiana have been arrested. “Jagroop has been arrested wiith the help of Ludhiana city police. Sadiq, who was arrested first, had confessed to his crime during interrogation and named four other accused, including Jagroop. Raids are being conducted to arrest the others. Sadiq has also confirmed the involvement of a sixth accused who is yet to be identified,” said the DIG.

2. Kerala Imam Booked for Alleged Sexual Assault

The Kerala Police on Tuesday, 12 February, booked an Imam for allegedly sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram last week. Police said the accused, Shafiq Al Qassimi, was booked under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

A senior police officer of the district said the accused was absconding and efforts were on to nab him.

A scholar and orator, Qassim (42) was also a member of the Imam Council of Kerala. The council suspended him and removed him from the post of chief Imam of the Thalikkode mosque after it received a video of him with the girl who is a madrassa student and soon after the police booked him.

3. Six-Year-Old Twins Kidnapped From School Bus in Madhya Pradesh

A businessman’s six-year-old twins – both boys – were kidnapped at gunpoint from their school bus near Nayagaon in Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh, on Tuesday, 12 February, police said.

The family of the kidnapped children lives in Sitapur on the Uttar Pradesh side of Chitrakoot, three kilometres from Sadguru Public School where the two boys are studying in lower kindergarten. Their father deals in herbal oils.

Following the incident, superintendent of police, Chitrakoot (UP), Manoj Jha said all entry and exit points had been sealed and police teams were working in coordination with the Satna police.

4. ‘Unemployed’ Doctor Jumps to Death in Delhi

A 68-year-old doctor reportedly killed himself by jumping off the second floor of his building in northwest Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar, police said. According to police, he had tried to slit his throat and hang himself from a ceiling fan before jumping.

Police were informed about the incident after the family members of the man, Vipin Bajaj, discovered his body lying outside the house.

Initially, the family suspected foul play, alleging that Bajaj was killed, police said. However, after a forensic examination of his room, police found a knife with blood stains and a dupatta wrapped around his neck, which led them to conclude it was a suicide.

5. Lovers Bludgeoned to Death in Odisha

The bodies of a man and woman, suspected to be lovers, were recovered on Tuesday, 12 February, from a house at Ranipatna area of Odisha's Balasore town, police said.

The two could have been bludgeoned to death with an iron rod in their sleep last night, said Subhransu Nayak, Inspector in-Charge of Sahadevkhunta Police Station.

"The police, aided by a forensic team, are on the spot and inquiry is on, he said adding that the motive and other details can be known only after the investigation got over.

Kailash Chandra Sahu, the husband of the deceased woman Laxmipriya Sahu (32), has been detained for questioning, police said.

6. CRPF Constable Held for ‘Sexually Harassing’ Woman on Goa's Calangute Beach

A Central Reserve Police Force jawan was Tuesday, 12 February, arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a woman in Goa's Calangute beach, an official said.

Rajvir Prabhudayal Singh (43), a Rajasthan resident, was held after a woman, who was bathing at the beach, accused him of using vulgar and abusive language and inappropriately touching her, Calangute Police station official Jivba Dalvi said.

Inspector Dalvi said the incident happened at around 4pm on Tuesday, 12 February, when the complainant, her husband and their children were at Calangute beach.

7. Indian-Origin Man Jailed for Trying to Rob Jewellery Store in UK Wearing Burqa

An Indian-origin robber who dressed up in a burqa to steal from a jewellery store while threatening a shop worker with a knife in the city of Leicester has been jailed for over four years behind bars.

Imtiaz Patel, 42, had pleaded guilty to the knife-point robbery and possession of a bladed weapon. He was sentenced to four years imprisonment for the robbery and a concurrent nine-month imprisonment for possession of the weapon at Leicester Crown Court on Monday, 11 February.

Patel was also sentenced to an additional two months imprisonment for breaching a community order, with the total jail time adding up to four years and two months.

8. Serial Molester Gets 10 Years Rigorous Imprisonment for Rape of 8-Year-Old

A special court under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on Monday, 11 February, sentenced a 32-year-old serial rapist and molester, Ayyaz Ansari, to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years for sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl in Vakola in 2013.

Ansari, known as the one-eyed molester, has been booked in 21 cases, of which 13 are related to sexual abuse and molestation. The rest are thefts and robbery. This is the sixth conviction for Ansari for raping a minor.

He has been sentenced to life imprisonment in two cases, and seven years in jail in three cases. The court has also asked him to pay a fine of Rs 65,000 in the Vakola case, of which Rs 45,000 will be given to the survivor.

9. Four-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Raped by Sanitation Worker in Delhi

A four-year-old girl was raped by a 35-year-old sanitation worker in a public toilet in Naraina on 6 February. Police said they arrested the man on Monday, 11 February.

The girl lives in a slum in Naraina with her father, who works as a driver, and her step mother. Police said the girl’s father called the police on Monday and reported a suspected sexual assault on her daughter by some local resident. When a police team reached the spot they took the child to a hospital where a medical examination confirmed sexual assault.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Monika Bhardwaj said a police team questioned the girl and based on the details given by her, zeroed in on Kailash. He is a sanitation worker in a public toilet, and is a native of Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh. He was arrested following a raid at his residence in Naraina.
