1. Delhi Inmate Alleges Rape by Head Constable on Train, FIR Filed

Delhi Police has registered an FIR of rape against a head constable after a woman, lodged in Tihar Jail, alleged he raped her in a moving train. She alleged the incident took place on 3 August, when she was returning to Delhi from West Bengal after attending a court hearing.

DCP (Railways) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said, “Based on her complaint, we’ve registered an FIR and further investigations are on.” Police said two cases of kidnapping were registered in Delhi and West Bengal against the woman.

“The woman was taken to West Bengal on 1 August for a court hearing. Five police personnel – two women, two constables and the head constable, who was their in-charge – were present with her. The incident took place as they were returning to Delhi. Around 1:30 am, she claimed she asked them to take her to the washroom, but the women personnel were asleep. She said the head constable offered to take her,” a senior officer said.

2. 8-Year-Old Killed in Andhra Pradesh Govt Hostel

An eight-year-old boy was found murdered at a welfare hostel for other backward class (OBC) youth at Challapalli town in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district in the early hours of Tuesday, the police said. A 14-year-old student of Class 10, who is also a resident of the hostel, has been arrested in connection with the crime.

A case of murder under section 302 on the Indian Penal Code has been filed and the accused has been sent to a juvenile home, police added.

The body of Dasari Aditya, a class 3 student, was found near the bathroom of the hostel by students around 4 am. They immediately alerted the hostel authorities who, in turn, informed the police. His throat had been slit.

3. JNU Rape: Soumya, Jigisha Attacked at Same Spot

The rape of the 21-year-old JNU student by a cab driver on Friday allegedly took place behind a bus stop on Nelson Mandela Marg, the same area where journalist Soumya Vishwanathan and call centre executive Jigisha Ghosh were attacked.

In her statement to police, the survivor said that after she boarded the cab on Mandir Marg, the driver offered her a spiked drink and she started feeling dizzy after consuming it.

After reaching Nelson Mandela Marg, instead of taking a left towards JNU, he drove straight towards Vasant Kunj. He stopped the car between two bus stops 10 metres apart, a short distance from a police station, pushed his seat back, pulled the woman towards him and pressed himself against her.

4. Spate of Robberies by Two Men Shakes Vasant Kunj

Around 4 am on Tuesday, residents of Block C-3 in Vasant Kunj woke up to a rude shock, a broken lock of a house in the locality and an alleged theft. By Tuesday evening, footage from around four CCTVs showed two men walking with a crowbar, attempting to break into at least 10 homes, claimed RWA president Ashok Srivastava.

The block is located opposite Vasant Kunj (North) police station. DCP (South West) Devender Arya said, “One house was burgled and in the footage we can see two men. A case under sections 457 (lurking, house-trespass or house-breaking by night) and 380 (theft) of the IPC has been registered.” Police denied claims that the accused attempted to break into other homes.

5. Woman’s Body Found in a Gunny Bag in Sagarpur, Police Register Murder Case

The body of an unidentified woman, aged between 25 and 30 years, was found stuffed in a gunny sack, and dumped in an open ground in a residential colony in southwest Delhi’s Shivpuri near Sagarpur on Tuesday morning.

Police said there were strangulation marks around the woman’s neck, suggesting that she was throttled to death. However, the exact cause of death is it yet to be ascertained as the woman’s body has been preserved in a government hospital mortuary for identification and autopsy report is awaited, the police said.

Deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Devender Arya said a case of murder and destruction of evidence has been registered at the Sagarpur police station against unidentified persons.

“The woman is married. We are trying to establish her identity. She might have been murdered by her relatives. However, there are no clear signs of sexual assault,” said DCP Arya.

6. Delhi Court Acquits Man Cops Called Most Wanted

A Delhi court acquitted a man branded by Delhi Police as the “most wanted criminal of UP” after officers failed to prove he was a wanted criminal carrying a Rs 50,000 reward, which they claimed during his arrest.

As per court documents, in 2013, the crime branch got a tip-off from an informer that an offender, “Shadab Qureshi, who is the most wanted criminal of UP, carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 announced by UP Police, would come in his black Skoda car to meet his associate in Wazirpur”.

A raiding party waited for the accused, who was spotted coming towards Kanhaiya Nagar Metro station. Police asked him to stop, following which the man shot at the party twice, it was alleged. Additional Sessions Judge Harish Kumar said, “No evidence was led by prosecution to prove that accused was wanted criminal in UP and that there was (reward) of Rs 50,000 on him.”

7. Five Men Who Illegally Withdrew Around Rs 8 Crore with Fake Cheques Held

Delhi Police on Tuesday said they had busted an interstate gang that had allegedly withdrawn more than Rs 8 crore from 14 bank accounts across the country by obtaining confidential details of account holders from bank officials.

Five men, including the alleged mastermind, were arrested in the past one week. At least four more suspects, including bank officials, have been identified. Raids are on to nab the suspects who may lead investigators to a bigger syndicate, police said.

The arrested men are Jitender Singh alias Jitu, the 37-year-old mastermind, Sunil Chhibber, 58, Alok Kumar Trivedi,25, Mohammad Irshad Ali, 29, and Arun Kumar Raghav, 48. Three forged cheques, a printer and a laptop used for making the forged cheques and Rs 6 lakh were recovered from them.

8. Two Bangla Robbers Who Killed B’Luru Bizman Held

On 22 January, a gang of six armed dacoits wearing masks struck at a pharmacy owner’s house in Karnataka, murdered him and assaulted his wife before fleeing with cash and valuables worth lakhs.

The deceased, Venkan Banavi (72), was the relative of a former Karnataka home minister and lived in Raj Nagar, Hubballi. The criminals spent 90 minutes in his house and even ate bananas in the kitchen after ransacking the house. They tied up all the occupants and strangled Banavi to death with a bedsheet.

Six months on, Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has arrested two Bangladeshi criminals, Imran alias Manik (35) and Alamgir (33), for committing the heist and murder, apart from other crimes. “This gang would come to India every few months, commit a series of robberies in metros and return. Not only would they rob homes, but also kill the occupants if they resisted,” DCP (Crime) Ram Gopal Naik said.

9. 25-Year-Old Stabbed, Shot in North East Delhi

In a suspected case of gang war, a 25-year-old man was stabbed and gunned down in north east Delhi’s Nand Nagri on Monday evening. The victim, Vicky, was found involved in four cases of robbery and snatching. A case of murder has been registered.

The crime took place around 8 pm when Vicky, a resident of E2-Block of Nand Nagri, had gone near the MCD flats. Police suspect he got into an argument with the assailants, who shot him multiple times. To ensure that he was dead, the attackers stabbed him as well.

The victim was found lying in a pool of blood by a passerby who called the PCR. He was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The body was moved to the mortuary and handed over to the family after an autopsy.
