High Court Extends Stay on Law for Quota to Marathas by Six Months

The Bombay High Court on Thursday extended for another six months its stay on a state law, which seeks to reserve 16 percent seats for the Marathas in government jobs and educational institutions.

The court also allowed the government to forward its data on the social and educational status of the Marathas to the recently set up State Commission for Backward Classes to examine if the reservations for the Maratha community in state jobs and educational institutions would be justified.

The division bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice G S Kulkarni refused to vacate the stay it had imposed in April last year, restraining the government from implementing the quota for eleven months.

In another blow to new building projects in the city, the Bombay High Court on Thursday refused to annul its year-old order restraining the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the state government from clearing any fresh proposal for undertaking constructions.

In doing so, a division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice CV Bhadang dismissed the petition filed by Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry (MCHI), seeking review of its February 29, 2016 order pertaining to residential and commercial buildings.

The court had issued the first ban order on the ground that new constructions in the city would increase the population, which would, in turn, lead to generation of more municipal solid waste as well as construction waste.

Unruly Driver Speeds off After Assaulting, Abusing Female Cop

The police are on the lookout for a woman in her mid-40s, who allegedly pushed a female constable after her car was stopped during a routine nakabandi.

The incident took place near Powai on Wednesday evening, when the woman, who was driving a red Hyundai Accent, was asked to halt her car. The woman, however, refused to pay heed to the police and continued driving. The police eventually managed to stop her car a few metres away, and asked her to step down and show them all the necessary documents related to the vehicle.

An argument ensued between the woman and the police officials. When a female police constable tried to intervene, the woman pushed her, banged the door of the car and sped away.

"Officials have recorded the entire incident on camera. The woman did not only assault the female constable, but also verbally abused her before speeding away.

A 72-year-old Mumbai businessman paid Rs 3.5 lakh as bait money on the CBI’s advice to entrap a senior taxman demanding bribes from him in December 2013. More than three years on, JP Vaghani said the central investigating agency is yet to return his hard-earned cash.

The corrupt official — income tax joint commissioner Sanjeev Ghei, posted in Thane — was nailed, and the CBI kept the decoy cash in its custody as proof to show during trial.

Vaghani said on Wednesday that such cash is either destroyed or stored, and the government usually pays a refund to the owner within three months of an operation.
