As India ushers in its 71st year of Independence, Google decided to celebrate the spirit of the country through its beautiful tricolour Doodle. The design recreates the Indian Parliament in saffron colour with motifs of peacock, the national animal of India and the Ashok Chakra at the bottom. The paper-cut style doodle is the creation of a Mumbai-based artist Sabeena Karnik.

On 15 August 1947, the front page of The Times of India jubilantly proclaimed “Nation Wakes to New Life!” Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of the Dominion of India, raised the national flag above the Red Fort’s Lahori Gate as a declaration of the country’s newly won independence. The 90-year independence movement was a campaign marked by both peaceful endurance and unwavering patriotism, shaping a strong sense of national identity for the people of India that live on today. To honor the anniversary, Mumbai-based artist Sabeena Karnik used a unique paper-cut art style to create a Doodle fit for the bold and colorful celebration of today’s events. The Parliament House depicted in her work commemorates this day, this movement, and this triumph of Independence.

Here is how the doodle was brought to life, one step at a time:

It is not the first time that Google is celebrating Independence Day. On previous Independence day anniversaries, Google had celebrated by paying homage to India by doodling the Red Fort in Delhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March and Indian postage stamps among others.
