With New Year’s Eve fast approaching, the pressure to make grand party plans is slowly mounting. Expensive covers, even more expensive alcohol, hangovers, impulsive party shopping – sound like the usual drill? Why not give it a miss this year and usher in 2018 a little differently?

1. An Intimate Get-Together?

Chuck those crowded parties on new year’s eve and instead plan an intimate get-together with just the people who matter. Yes, new year’s eve is a perfect occasion to catch up with friends you haven’t really been able to give time to amidst hectic work schedules. A pot-dinner or bonfire can be a great way to bond over food and drinks.

Whatever you choose, just make sure to keep it simple yet memorable.

2. A Games Night

How about ditching club-hopping for a games night at home? Think cards, charades, board games. Wouldn’t it be fun to challenge friends and family to games which have been a part of your growing up years? And those board games will also get a chance to make their way out of the closet to usher in the new year.

You can even call a tarot-reader to get a hint of what’s in store for you in the coming new year! Even if you don’t believe in it, it will still make for a night to remember.

3. Visit Family

More often than not, we end up neglecting our families for work or studies. Why not visit your hometown and welcome 2018 with family? They are your support-system, people who will never leave your side, the ones who love you unconditionally, so why not make them feel special?

And we aren’t talking about a Karan Johar movie-esque melodramatic reunion (think Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham) so don’t chicken out already.

But a small new year celebration with family will be way more special than so many celebrations combined together. Not to forget the priceless glee that will magically appear on your parents’ face on seeing you give them a surprise. Think about it!

4. Movie Marathon

New year or not, binge watching movies is always a fun exercise. Call me an old soul trapped in the body of millennial but I would trade ten thousand “happening” new year parties for binge-watching my favourite movies. Any day. And new year’s eve is just one of them (I am growing old, I guess).

If you don’t want to do it all by yourself, call over a few friends and have a FRIENDS marathon. If you want to spend the new year’s eve with your partner, watch a romantic movie together. End the movie date by popping a bottle of champagne to welcome 2018!

5. Take a Trip

Hit the roads a couple of days before the new year’s eve. Solo or with friends, that’s your pick. Why? Because travelling makes one richer in ways one can’t imagine. Why not bring in the new year amidst mountains or by the sea? Or some place you have always wanted to visit.

The location doesn’t matter as much the experience. Make friends with strangers, soak in the local culture, pick up the things you love. You will come back with memories and learnings for a lifetime.

This will require some planning so don your thinking hats now!
