An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, hit J&K, Delhi NCR and other parts of north India late Sunday.

The tremor struck 21 kilometres (14 miles) southwest of the town of Ashkasham, and 186 kilometers (300 kilometers) northeast of Afghan capital Kabul, at a depth of 92.4 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey as reported by AP. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The Hindu Kush mountain range, that stretches between central Afghanistan and northern Pakistan, and lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates is frequently hit by earthquakes.
