After Narendra Modi sanctioned Rs 1 lakh as ex-gratia to the next of the kin of the 32-year-old e-rickshaw driver Ravindra Kumar, who was beaten to death for espousing 'Clean India', Kumar’s wife was handed a job letter on Wednesday.

On Monday, Modi had condemned the killing of the e-rickshaw driver in Delhi for stopping two men from urinating in public and directed the authorities to punish the culprits. Kumar was beaten to death allegedly by a dozen men outside the GTB Nagar Metro Station, according to the police.

Job Letter to the Widow

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation on Wednesday handed over a job letter to the widow of an e-rickshaw driver.

North Delhi Mayor Preety Agarwal visited the victim's family at their residence at Kingsway Camp area and handed over the letter to Rani for appointment as a class-IV employee, a senior NDMC official said.

The class-IV employee position is that of a beldar/coolie as per the minimum wages approved by the central government, the official said.

Agarwal said Rani has been engaged under the 'Dependents Welfare Scheme', and "this decision has been taken in her favour, as her husband was a victim and killed by a group of persons, after he had asked them not to urinate in the open".

She further said, "This arrangement is made as per the existing rules. She has been offered a period of engagement for 89 days initially, but this would continue in future as well."

Two Arrests So Far

Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested a man and apprehended a juvenile in connection with the case. The accused Shekhar and the juvenile were caught by the police after scanning CCTV camera footage of the incident outside the liquor shop near the metro station.

On Tuesday, the Crime Branch was also roped in to assist a probe into the killing.
