The police on Friday, 31 August, said they have registered a case after Delhi University All India Students' Association president Kawalpreet Kaur alleged she was slapped and attacked by ABVP members at the Kirori Mal College.

Kaur stated that she was later informed of the identity of some of the assaulters – Mohit Dahiya, Sandeep Sharma and others.

The ABVP, however, has said that those involved in the incident were not its members.

Kaur said she had gone to meet a professor at the college along with two of her friends when the alleged incident happened. They were walking in the campus, they saw a few of their friends campaigning and joint in the action. However, she soon realised that they had been followed by four members of the ABVP, who then started to threaten and abuse them.

She alleged that they abused her and her friends and she slapped one of them out of this provocation.

...We were constantly being abused by those (ABVP) people. When I asked them not to do so, they started hurling abuses at me and humiliated me in front of my friends. They used such shameful words for me, I can’t spell them out here. It made me feel very humiliated and provoked me so much that my natural response was to slap him which I did. Immediately, without losing a second, the guy slapped me so tightly that I lost my balance for seconds and I had tears in my eyes.

She claimed that the man who slapped her ran away and her friend Dhiraj followed him, but he was surrounded by 12-15 ABVP members who then began to beat him up.

“They assaulted (Dhiraj) brutally until a professor stopped them and rescued him. They were saying that Dhiraj had said that 'Hindustan Murdabad' that's why he deserves this and so does his friends. They also said that these people are urban naxals,” she added in her statement.

Both Kaur and Dhiraj were taken to the Hospital to undergo treatment and check-up.

“I just want to say to everyone that all these attacks won’t put us down. We will fight the humiliation and won't be cowed down by these attacks,” she said.
