1. Delhi Cop Arrested for Killing Woman and Her Friend

A traffic inspector of Delhi Police was arrested along with an accomplice on Saturday, 31 March, for allegedly shooting dead a man and his girlfriend.

The cop, Dinesh Kumar, reportedly told the police that he was in a relationship with the woman, Preeti (32), who had declined his marriage proposal, and wished to get engaged to Annu Chauhan (26), the other victim.

On 25 March, shot both of them with his service revolver.

“The accused has told us during questioning that he killed the woman and her friend because she had been ignoring him for some time and had even changed her phone number so that the traffic sub-inspector could not contact her. What angered him all the more was that the woman was going to get engaged to another man,” said Upender Kumar, the Ghaziabad SSP.

2. Mumbai Man Arrested for Abetting Wife's Suicide

A 30-year old Mumbai man was arrested by the police on Saturday, 1 April, for allegedly abetting the suicide of his wife.

Police said the woman suspected her husband for having an extramarital affair. The woman reportedly hung herself on Friday evening and was found by her brother on Saturday morning.

The bother has told the police that the woman often complained of harassment. The bother, in his statement, also said that he had visited his sister on 23 March. During the visit, he added, she told him that she had heard her husband talking to a woman and suspected him of having an extramarital affair.

3. 17-Yr-Old Girl Strangled by Father in Honour Killing Case

A 17-year-old girl in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra was allegedly killed by her father who was against her friendship with a boy studying with her in a college, police said on Sunday.

Jamkhed police station inspector Pandurang Pawar said they suspected it to be a case of 'honour killing'.

The incident took place in Chondi village, the native place of state minister Ram Shinde, who demanded stringent punishment for the accused.

The deceased's father and two maternal uncles were arrested in connection with the incident, Pawar said.

The girl used to frequently chat with the boy over phone and go to college with him on his two-wheeler, he said.

Her father Pandurang Shreerang Saygunde, 51, asked her several times to discontinue her friendship with the boy but the girl failed to heed his advice, he said.

On March 23, Saygunde, in a fit of anger, allegedly throttled his daughter to death at their home in Chondi village, located around 60 km from here, Pawar said.

4. Shiv Sena Corporator Killed by Duo Over Water Dispute

Shiv Sena corporator Amardeep Rode was Sunday hacked to death allegedly by two of his friends following a scuffle over water in Maharashtra's Parbhani district, police said.

The incident took place in the morning in the district's Jayakwadi Colony, over 500 kilometres from here, said an official.

"Rode, a corporator with the Parbhani Municipal Corporation, had intervened after some women complained about getting less water from a public tap in the area," the official said.

"A pit had been dug near the water tap to draw out excess quantities and Rode objected to this. His friend Ravi Gaikwad is reported to have dug the pit and Rode went to ask him about it. An altercation ensued during which Rode tried to attack Gaikwad with an axe," the official added.

Rode's friend Kiran Dake tried to stop him from escalating the argument but the former attacked him as well, he said.

"Gaikwad overpowered Rode and hit him with the axe.

Gaikwad and Dake then assaulted Rode with stones and sticks, killing him instantly. The two have surrendered to the police," he informed.

5. Online Fraud Gang That Duped Rs 200 Crore Busted

The Uttar Pradesh police's Special Task Force (STF) Sunday said it has nabbed the kingpin of a gang that procured data of 14 lakh customers illegally and allegedly duped people to the tune of Rs 200 crore through online fraud over a period of time.

Nandan Rao Patel, arrested here on Saturday by the Noida field unit of the STF, used to procure the data of clients of major online shopping companies and sell them to fake call centres, police officials said.

The first related case was registered in Varanasi in 2008, they said. Explaining the modus operandi, STF Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajkumar Mishra said that Patel was the "director" of a digital promotion and bulk SMS firm by the name of Anic World Company. "He would get the (consumer) data hacked through people he knew and buy it for Rs 2-3 per customer. He would sell this data to fake call centres, duping online buyers in Delhi-NCR, Bihar, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, etc for Rs 5-6 per customer," Mishra said.

He said Patel and his gang would target customers of online shopping sites like Flipkart, Amazon, Myntra, Paytm, Snapdeal, Shopclues, HomeShop18 etc, besides general and life insurance companies.

6. Motorcycle-Borne Men Steal Rs 3.5 Lakh From Nashik Trader

Three masked motorcycle-borne men robbed Rs 3.5 lakh from a medical equipment trader in Nashik in Maharashtra, police said Sunday.

Virag Chandrakant Shah (38) had reached his apartment complex and was parking his two-wheeler in the basement when the three accused fired a shot at him, possibly from an airgun, and escaped with his bag containing Rs 3.5 lakh, an official said.

"The incident happened around 9 pm on Saturday in Kulkarni Colony, close to where the police control room is.

Efforts are on to nab the three persons. CCTV footage of the entire locality is being checked," the official added.

He added that a check of the crime spot did not reveal any evidence of firing and it is possible the robbers discharged blanks from the firearm to frighten Shah, who did not receive any injuries.

A case has been registered at Sarkarwada police station and further probe was underway, the official said.

7. Minor's Rape Accused Flees From Police Custody

Hanummantha Basappa Kamballi (39), accused for raping a minor fled on the way to Hiriyadka jail in Udupi in Karnataka, on Sunday, 31 March.

The kidnap, rape and murder of a 17-year-old had taken place at Moodusagri of Shivalli village in Udupi on 9 March.

The accused had lured the minor girl on the pretext of a job with higher salary and took her to an isolated place. The investigation revealed that when the victim shouted and threatened to inform the police and the family, the accused strangulated her using her 'dupatta'.

The police has asked the public to inform them if they spot the accused.

8. Militant Module Busted in Punjab, 5 Arrested

A militant module has been busted and five of its "highly radicalised" youths arrested in Punjab, police said Sunday.

The accused were allegedly planning to kill Hindu leaders and members of Dera Sacha Sauda, as per a State Special Operations Cell, Punjab police, release here.

One .32 bore pistol (along with magazine and four live rounds) and 15 letter pads of 'Babbar Khalsa International' have been recovered from the arrested, the release said.

The arrested are residents of Punjab and Haryana, identified as Harvinder Singh from Panchkula, Sultan Singh from Kurukshetra, Karamjeet Singh from Moga, Lovepreet Singh from Sangrur, and Gurpreet Singh resident of Chandigarh, it read. "They are planning to kill specific targets including Hindu leaders and members of Dera Sacha Sauda, who were allegedly responsible for incidents of sacrilege/desecration," said Assistant Inspector General, SSOC, Varinderpaul Singh.

The arrested youths were radicalised over social media by suspected persons based in Europe, he said, adding they were planning to commit various violent acts to disturb peace and communal harmony in the state.

9. Seven Arrested in Jammu and Kashmir for Peddling Drugs

Seven people have been arrested in Srinagar and Kulgam districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday on the charge peddling drugs, police said.

In Nowhatta area of Srinagar five people were arrested at a check post and 28 grams of brown sugar (heroin) was seized from them, a police spokesperson said.

In Nillow area of south Kashmir's Kulgam district, police intercepted a truck and seized 11 kg poppy straw, the spokesman said, adding two people – Samarjeet Singh and Divender Singh – residents of Amritsar, were arrested.

He said, "Our consistent action against such anti-social elements should encourage the locals to come forward with any information pertaining to drug peddling in their neighbourhood."
