A woman in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district died after an infection developed in her body for carrying a dead foetus in her womb for five days. The woman died after doctors in several private hospitals refused to operate on her without payment of fees.

Saraswati, 22, and her husband Gulabdas Mahant reportedly rushed to hospitals, including the Jamunadevi Memorial Maternity Hospital where the couple was asked to pay Rs 10,000 in advance and arrange three units of blood, reported The Times of India.

When she complained of severe pain due to the infections, the hospital asked her to go elsewhere.

They then visited Krishna Hospital, where her condition was deemed “too critical” to operate. The third hospital, Srishti, agreed to operate on her, scheduling it for Tuesday night. Saraswati died on Monday night.

“Without realizing the emergency, earlier the doctors refused to accept her case and later postponed it. Is it how doctors work?” asked her husband Mahant.

India alone accounts for the 15% of global deaths during pregnancy and childbirth. According to a report in UK medical journal The Lancet, at least 45,000 such deaths were reported in the country in 2015.
