1. I-T Employees Threaten to Strike, Won’t Go For Raids

Taxmen have threatened to strike work from 1 August. They will not take part in any search, survey and seizure operations if their demands are not met. In a press statement issued by the Joint Council of Action (JCA) that includes Income Tax Gazetted Officers Association and Income Tax Employees Federation, which represents 97% of the workforce, they plan to start their agitation by boycotting Income Tax Day celebrations on 24 July.

Their demands include providing workers with basic amenities, such as sufficient office space and other infrastructure, an improvement to I-T Business Application Software System, providing better services to tax-payers. They have complained of stagnation in the ranks owing to lack of timely promotions.

2. Truckers’ Strike: Consumers to Feel Pinch Once Stock Runs Dry

Nearly 4,500 trucks were off the road in Mysuru and brought supply of goods and commodities to a standstill on Friday owing to the all-India truckers’ strike.

The strike was called by the All India Motor Transport Congress and the South India Motor Transport Welfare Association pressing for reduction in insurance, diesel price, etc. Vehicles went off the road from 6 am.

Kodandaram, president, Mysuru Lorry Owners’ Association, said the response was near total as almost 90% of the trucks operating in Mysuru stayed off the road in support of the strike. He said there were a few trucks that had arrived early in the day and perishable commodities had to be off-loaded. Hence, these were exempted.

3. Flyer With Gold Biscuits Tucked into Underwear Caught

Alert customs officials of the Kempegowda International Airport intercepted a passenger and seized 816 gm of gold worth Rs 25.15 lakh from his underwear on Thursday.

Shamsuddin, a resident of Bengaluru, arrived by an Air Arabia flight GF 280 from Bahrain on Thursday. Customs officials spotted him walking with an unusual gait while he was going through the green channel through which passengers pass through who have no duty payable goods with them.

The officials soon profiled him and picked him up for a detailed inspection. That is when they discovered the gold biscuits concealed inside two specially tailored inner cavities of of his underwear.

4 .Four Farmer Suicides in Bidar Weeks After K’taka CM’s Loan Waiver Announcement

A farmer in Bidar allegedly took his own life on Thursday, taking the total number of suicides in the district to four in July.

The recent suicides have taken place even though the Karnataka government announced a farm loan waiver scheme earlier this month in the first budget presented by the HD Kumaraswamy cabinet.

On Thursday, 50-year-old Balaji allegedly killed himself at his residence in Basavakalyan taluk in Bidar district. He had loans to pay off with Pragati Krishna Grameen Bank and with private moneylenders in his area. "We were called in yesterday (Thursday). This is the second farmer taking his own life this month in our police station limits. He owed Rs 50,000 to the PKG Bank and Rs 4 lakh to private moneylenders," said Veeranna, a police inspector at Basavakalyan Rural Police Station.

5. Man Murders wife, Surrenders

A man after allegedly murdering his wife turned himself in at the jurisdictional police station at Rajagaopal Nagar on Thursday night.

The accused, Jagadish, 45, is from Piriyapattana, Chamarajanagar district. He had been employed at a packaging unit in Peenya. The deceased, Soumya, 29, also was from the same village and worked at a garment factory in the city. The couple were married for over a decade and had a 10-year-old son.

Marital discord set in after Jagadish suspected his wife of having an extra marital affair, said the police.
