1. State’s First Detention Centre for Illegal Immigrants to Open in Jan
Amid rising concerns over the introduction of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship bill, Karnataka is gearing up to launch its first detention centre for illegal immigrants.
“Decks have been cleared for the detention centre and it will be operational in January,” said Amar Kumar Pandey, additional director general of police (law and order).
The Union government plans to establish detention centres in all states before introducing the NRC and Citizenship Bill. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has already unveiled plans of introducing NRC across the country by 2024.
Officials from the state home department said the new centre, located in Nelamangala, about 40km from Bengaluru city, will house immigrants who have either overstayed illegally or infiltrated into the country.

2. Man Gets Life for Assaulting Minor, Dumping Her Body in Lake
A local court convicted a 35-year-old mechanic of sexually assaulting and murdering a seven-year-old girl in June 2012, and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Nagaraja M, 35, a resident of Nallurahalli village near Whitefield and from Raichur, has been slapped with a penalty of Rs 10,000. Whitefield police arrested Nagaraja on the night of 16 June 2012 from Nallurahalli, hours after he committed the crime. Nagaraja knew the girl’s family as they were also from Raichur district.
On the evening of 16 June, 2012, the girl went for the inauguration of a temple in Nallurahalli. He took her to a shop under the pretext of buying her biscuits.

3. Operations Begin at Bengaluru International Airport's Second Runway
The second runway at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has commenced operations. The first flight took off on the 4000-m long and 45-m wide airstrip on Friday.
In a statement, the KIAL officials said that this makes the Bengaluru airport the first in the country to have two parallel runways that enable simultaneous take-offs.
"It is a historic day for us at BLR Airport as we commenced operations on the new runway. Our first runway opened 11 years ago, and became a linchpin for the region's economic development during the last decade. With the aviation industry in India set for exponential growth, two operational runways will provide the thrust required to cater to this demand and further bolster growth of Karnataka and India," said Hari Marar, CEO and Managing Director of KIAL.

4. 2 Apartments Fined Rs 5.5L for not Composting Waste
The civic authorities on Friday imposed heavy fines on two apartments for failing to compost solid waste.
In a move aimed at sending a warning to other apartments, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike slapped a fine of Rs 1.70 lakh on Sterling Apartments located in the Radhakrishna Temple ward and Rs 3.75 lakh on Raheja Pebble Bay, RMV 2nd Stage, for failing to take up in-situ composting.
In-situ composting is a system where green waste materials are laid out on top of the ground to decompose back into the soil’s surface. The civic body said residents had complained that bulk waste generators supposed to take up in-situ composting were instead handing it over to garbage auto tippers or just dumping it on public places.

5. With 14k Cases, K’taka Tops Dengue List
Over 35,000 cases of dengue were reported across south India till October this year, with the maximum number in Karnataka.
According to information in the government’s reply to a question in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing session, Karnataka, with 14,139 cases, tops the list of states and south Indian states registering 38% of cases. The mosquitoborne tropical disease has claimed 36 lives till October this year in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
The data revealed that 91,457 cases of dengue were reported across the country till October, with Maharashtra and Goa having 9,899 and 908 cases, respectively. The number for the year could go up after data for November and December is collated, officials said.
