A requisition by Muslim clerics to the government to name Karnataka Haj Bhavan in Bengaluru after Mysuru warrior Tipu Sultan has kicked up a row with the BJP opposing the proposal, dubbing it another appeasement plan for minorities.
Wakf minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan on Friday said he has received the proposal to name Haj Bhavan after Tipu Sultan and a final decision will be taken after consulting Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy.

He also expressed hope that there wouldn’t be any opposition to the proposal as Haj Bhavan is an autonomous body, adding that Tipu Sultan Jayanti will be celebrated by the government this year too.

The minister’s statement has sparked off protests by the BJP. The foundation stone for Haj Bhavan was laid during former Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda’s tenure and it was inaugurated in 2016.

At first police were not even sure it was a case of murder as all they had was a human skull, a jaw bone, a leg bone and a few clothes found on a desolate stretch near Chikkanahalli village of Doddaballapura taluk, Benglauru Rural district. These were discovered four months ago and it appeared cold from the start, but the scanty evidence proved enough for police to solve the mystery.

On Thursday, police arrested a JCB operator for murdering his friend six months ago, hacking his body and scattering the remains in the wild. The skeletal and sartorial remains were found to be that of Shanta Kumar, 24, a resident of Aradeshahalli, near Devanahalli, and originally from Dandiganahalli in Tumakuru district, while his killer, Sridhar alias Shashi, is a resident of Chikkanahalli, near Doddaballapura. Sridhar confessed to killing Kumar on 3 January, 2018 as he coveted Kumar’s wife.
