A 17-year-old girl’s stalker in Uttar Pradesh's Etawah killed her as well as her 13-year-old sister on Monday night. The accused had been booked in an FIR, but got out on bail later, the Economic Times reported.

This case adds to the number of crimes against women being reported in UP. According to ET, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had written to the legislative assembly last month that these crimes have been on a rise in the past year.

According to Adityanath's answer, there has been a 25 percent increase in rapes, 40 percent increase in incidents of outraging the modesty, 35 percent jump in cases of kidnappings of women, and a 50 percent increase in cases of eve teasing between 1 April 2017 and 31 January 2018, from the corresponding period in 2016-17 under the then Samajwadi Party government.

Yogi Adityanath is also proposing for death sentence for rape against minors.

In Etawah, the brother of the two girls Jitendra Kumar told ET that they had filed a complaint against a person named Jeetu some months back for stalking and harassing his sister.

“An FIR had been lodged but he managed to get out. A week ago, he had threatened to harm my sister again,”

The two girls had gone out in the fields to defecate on the night of 16 August when Jeetu, along with three of his friends, confronted them.

The police said one of these men held the younger sister while the 17-year-old was shot dead by Jeetu with a pistol after she refused to continue the affair with him. The younger girl was also shot dead within five minutes as she had witnessed the crime, the SSP was quoted by ET as saying.

The Samajwadi Party has criticised the BJP government for the rising crimes against women, pointing out how they came to power in the state by slamming SP on the law and order front and women’s safety issue.
