Union Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday, 9 August attended the Monsoon Session of the Parliament for the first time after his surgery, as the house voted to elect the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Jaitley attended the session for the first time after he underwent a renal transplant three months ago on 14 May, to vote for NDA candidate and JD(U) member Harivansh as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. In his absence, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal was appointed acting Finance Minister.

Earlier reports had suggested that Jaitley would resume work as the finance minister later this month. Jaitley’s first floor corner office in New Delhi’s North Block is reportedly being renovated to protect him from infections.

Jaitley’s three-month recovery period will reportedly end mid-August, NDTV had reported citing sources.

Jaitley underwent a kidney transplant at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi in May. He had been undergoing dialysis for a month before the surgery.

Jaitley had posted about his treatment on Twitter in April.

In September 2014, Jaitley underwent bariatric surgery to treat weight gain due to a long-standing diabetic condition. The surgery was first performed at Max Hospital, but he had to be later shifted to AIIMS because of complications.

During his recovery period, Jaitley has been active on social media, mainly writing blogs on various issues.
