The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has slammed the Centre for its change of stand regarding its minority status, calling the move politically motivated.

The government affidavit stated that providing minority status to AMU would be violating the Constitution and funds cannot be allocated on the basis of religion. It would also lead to similar demands from other minority communities.

It cited a yesteryear speech of PM Indira Gandhi and an example of a Constitution Bench in 1967 that established AMU as a central university.

The AMU has appealed in the Supreme Court to not allow NDA to withdraw its appeal in an attempt to retain its minority status.

The University maintains that decisions taken at the Centre level should not be nullified by a change in government as such decisions impact the nation as a whole.

The Centre has sought three weeks to respond back.

The AMU issue had led to heated debates in the Parliament earlier this year.
